I have always had trouble shooting pictures of my copper coins that are in slabs. They always seem to result in it being extremely dark in the picture. Would anybody have any ideas on lighting I could use to stop that in my pictures?

Many on this forum including myself have had good results with Ikea Jansjo lights. If you search the photography section of the forum there are excellent tips there as well.

I developed my smile directors for exactly this purpose. Search on "smile director" and some info will come up. Another option is to do axial lighting, but you will need to deal with the associated glare. A final option is just to fix the problem in post-processing, but this is hard to do with jpgs due to limited dynamic range...Ray

Does your camera have a Metering Mode setting? I'm guessing you're not using manual settings, as that would make this a non-problem.
