Couldnt find a better place to ask this question hehe.

Me and my father get into deep philosophical discussions about religion and we've come to realize that sometimes if you go too far off topic even just shooting the breeze you can get yourself into trouble.

So I was wondering for here. How far off topic is too off topic before its kinda considered hijacking the thread?

Some boards I've been on have been very picky and I've gotten into trouble very easily. Others couldnt care less to the point where its been so messy *I.ve* felt like the one that needed to reign them in lol.

So like ok, example:

Someone mentions in the thread "I saw inside a coin star today" and people are talking about the inside of one and I want to ask "Are coin stars good places to put your unwanted change?" because I know they used to take such a large percentage of your cut you were much better off wrapping and returning.

Then of course it could spiral into. Well maybe I shouldnt even use coin star maybe I should get two bank accounts at two different banks, get coins from one and return at the other so they dont get irritated by me swapping coins over and over again.

And so on.

Me personally I think well adjusted mature people (adult or otherwise) can carry on conversations that weave around a little bit and will go back to the original topic if there is something new and useful to add.

But like I said I have seen some pretty different opinions on that to either end of the spectrum so I'd like to know an idea of how I should limit myself/respond here.

Thanks!

If it is concerning any facet of numismatics and it is family friendly then go for it. If it's a tangent then I recommend starting a new thread as to keep the original posters thread on topic.

For established members we have a General Discussion forum for just such instances of off topic conversation if you so desire in the future.

I'm finding your response ambigious though I often have problems with english translations. I was only refering to here for numismatic stuff. If its still numismatic but it changes direction how far does a direction change need to be before it should be a new thread?

I have no problem starting new threads for whatever I think is a new topic:

Should I be using coin stars to return my coins?

and then another on

Should I get a second bank account to return my coins at so I dont irritate my favorite to get them from?

and then another on

Can I just walk into random banks with cash and ask for coins? Or do they most require an account?

I could pile all of this into one thread: Need help with roll searching.

But that makes it somewhat gobbldy gook conversation wise and doesn't help someone else trying to find information on my same topics.

Just trying to learn whats reasonable here.

If this just sounds too hard to even answer because it really is a 'feel thing' then I'll just be 'cautious' and watch for anyone getting bothered by my decisions.

Thanks!

I think you just have to feel those situations out. There is no hard and fast rule on when to start a thread- use your judgement!

If you are commenting in someone else's thread, try to stay on the topic. If the conversation wanders too far off course (as they sometimes do), usually one of our members or moderators will say something and get it back on track. It's best if the topics stay on-topic, so the person asking gets their questions answered and someone looking later on the same subject can find it useful.

If you have similar questions on a subject like what you describe, there's no problem opening a "General questions about roll hunting" topic and asking them all in one.

Very simple answer
When in doubt - DON'T

The moderators watch the board and we are very strict about keeping this forum family friendly.
Also when threads go "off topic" you will not find it unusual for us to split out a reply or delete it, or lock a topic.
So enjoy posting and if you are in doubt of what to post - Don't!

This should not be "ambiguous"

if the original post is about a dime with a Cud or different error and someone down the line posts that they have a Lincoln Cent that has the same type of error, I believe that would still be close enough to "on topic" to be considered contributing to the original post. But if someone is asking about a 1964 Dime in general and then someone just starts talking about their 1964 Lincoln Cent trying to get comments on his coin in the same thread as the 1964 dime then I believe that is probably a little to far off topic and should have been posted in its own thread. It is pretty much just a judgment call on the people in the conversation but I believe when something takes a turn and starts to wonder in its own little world other than what the original poster had in mind when he posted then it has probably went to far off topic and usually someone will step in and try to get it back on topic
