So after all the discussion on the forums here about how you have to talk to the teller at the bank a certain way to make sure you get hand rolled coin rolls and not the government ones I decided ok I gotta try this and went to the bank to get some.
I started to describe what I wanted and she looked at me funny and said so you want to give us rolls? And I was like no I want to get them from you just want them to be from other customers not from the bank.
Well going back and forth having a massive failure at communication we finally realized the problem at the same time.
My bank doesn't use 'machine rolled' rolls. They ONLY have customer rolled rolls. So she had no clue what I was trying to NOT get because I couldnt get them if I wanted to.
Ended up getting 10 dollars in pennies, 20 dollars in nickles, 20 dollars in dimes, and 50 dollars in quarters. Should keep me busy for a while. Did feel bad for her though so I'll try spread this out amongst multiple tellers and not do it too often. She had a hard time counting them and making sure they were all right and had me count it and could barely lift them.
There was one point in which both tellers had to access something to get my coins so all of a sudden there were no tellers at the bank at all and the people in line were totally lost as to what was going on. Then they both popped up at the same time 'out of no where' and the customers chuckled a little bit.
Those coins were heavy! Defintely not getting more then 100$s ever without a cart lolol. Edited by Schwanke 08/28/2012 07:59 am

Except for one time when my bank had sourced machine-rolled nickels from another branch in the city... no coin counters here, so had to buy rollers and re-roll them myself :)

Yeah I figure its a neat perk not having to worry about it but it was such a mess getting them I dont wanna burden the tellers too much. Still 100$s will last me a while so I guess doing that like once a month aint too big a deal. Although, there is this GIGANTIC (Would tripple the emphasis if I could lol) sign behind the counter saying their number one business practice is curtesy or something. (Kinda scary actually for a bank. Math is further down the list? :D) So I figure they may just be nice about it and not care so long as I am not coming in once a week and over doing it.

I too was worried about overdoing it when I first started roll hunting. As you get to know the tellers and they get to know you, you'll get a feel for how often you can or want to go in. My one piece of advice from my own experience is that it's probably easier for the teller to simply pull a whole box or two from the vault instead of rolls from several denominations. Last week when I went in a customer before me had just dropped off 4 boxes of pennies and the teller (who knows me now) encouraged me to take all four to save them from having to send them somewhere else :) I couldn't say no!

Well I cant quite tell how they are sorted back there because I cant see inside whatever they are holding them in. I tried to get a good look at the teller without staring hehe I'll try and see if I can get her next time and work this out. I dont know how often they change shifts at this particular branch so it may be months before I start to figure out the cycles.
Thanks for all the advice though!

Quote: So after all the discussion on the forums here about how you have to talk to the teller at the bank a certain way to make sure you get hand rolled coin rolls and not the government ones I decided ok I gotta try this and went to the bank to get some. Let me try and explain something here that is a common mis-conception amongst CRH's. There is really no such thing as Fed wrapped rolls or really anything Fed. Let me explain, each bank belongs to a region, A coin vault if I may. They order all coins from that coin vault which is shared with many other banks not just one type of bank. The coin vault will supply coinage to possibly 100's of different banks in their region through a variety of carriers. Garda, Loomis and Brinks to name a few. These carriers operate the coin vaults for those banks that are members, rolling loose coinage, stocking and accounting. When a bank orders coinage they go through either Garda, Loomis, Brinks or whoever services that vault to get their coins delivered. The secret in CRH is to figure out where the dividing lines are layed out for your area. I have to drive about 20 minutes to dump outside of my "Regions" area so those coins actually go out of my area and into somebody elses hopefully to never be seen again. Now if somebody is doing the reverse, which they are more than likely, it makes for some interesting hunting. I know for a fact that there is a person that CRH's half dollars and throws all 40%'ers back into the wild. I know his route and when he dumps, I am there 30 minutes to an hour after he is gone and get what he dumps. I have scored several times doing that, lets hope he doesn't catch on. Anyways, I hope this was educational to some people who are new to the hobby. HH

Bravo Freedom! Makes perfect sense the way you explain it. Unfortunately we've beat that horse several times...and they still don't get it.

Sort of off-topic anecdote, but relevant in a way:
When I used to search penny rolls (cents), I would return them to the bank 1-2 boxes at a time. But I would hold them and grip them (1 at a time) in such a way so that it appeared that they were very light. I've got pretty strong hands - you wouldn't know it from the looks of me - so when the tellers would reach over to grab them they would exert so much strength and often used both hands. I sure gave them a workout - that's more work than they do in a whole month. One half of the fun was searching the rolls, the other half was returning them!

Ok so with the regions, how big are these regions? You said drive 20 minutes. Can you estimate about what miles that is? 20 minutes could differ based on type of roads in your area. If its all city, interstate, etc.
Also, how do you tell which region a bank is in? Are the boxes you order labeled? (Just a guess) Or did you notice some of your rolls comeing back to you from other banks?
Also your saying multiple companies use the same region vaults so does that mean when you find that divider line, the bank could be the same but different branches could be in two different vault zones?
This does make more sense then being 'fed wrapped' because that would just cost them money for something that isn't really necessary based on volume. (However we all know how smart they are all the time. :)
Also since the teller at my bank claimed that they only had the ones handed in (and when I got them they were all random wierd paper tubes) does that mean they are not going back to the vault or they are not getting them from the vault and if I just go in and ask for stuff from 'in stock' chances are I'll get virgin rolls unless someone else is dumping at my bank.
I guess I aughta keep a record of the rolls I search and see if I can do some statistics on them or maybe take pictures of the paper tubes and see if I can identify their rolls and study their habbits lol.
The number one commodity I have is free time so I have no problem driving half an hour to get out of my zone, just gotta find a bank there that is my company which shouldnt be too hard. Maybe I'll even get lucky and find one with a coin counter.
Its good to know about the zones though because unless my area is so lightly traveled in terms of rolls that none of the banks go back to the zone vault I could be shooting myself in the foot if I get at one branch and dump at another branch less then a town over. I guess a phone call cant hurt, I could call and see if I can figure out if they do machine rolled coins or just customers at the other bank.
Thanks for more information.

Thanks for the information Freedom. I would also be interested to know more information about regions. Although it may be tough to gather this information because of security for the Vaults.
There is a warehouse located in a nondescript building downtown. In a very bad part of town I might add. I happened to pass it going home from work a couple of Saturdays ago. I was detoured because of road construction. What tipped me off was the 3 armed guards standing out front with shotguns. I don't think they were expecting the increased traffic. There was a Garda truck pulling behind a gated area on the side of the warehouse.
If this is one of the "vaults", I would suspect that I would have to travel quite a distance to find a a bank outside of region.

As far as customer wrapped rolls, my CU is more than happy to give me their CWR. It saves them the trouble of opening them up and dumping them into bags. The armored trucks will only pick up bags, not rolls. I have another bank that has the same policy, but they told me that these rolls have already been searched. Another CU has a coin counting machine and I am trying to get them to sell me the bags. The Manager is supposed to get back to me this week or the first of next month.

You can find the information you need at http://www.federalreserve.gov. Just start your search for "Areas" or "Regions" or Distribution. It took me almost a day, off and on, total to figure out that the region I live in is one of two that serve the entire west side of my state. The northern most boundry of my region to the next is only a 20 minute drive (residential) to the north. It is 2 hours drive, Interstate/residential to the southern type of my region.

And if all else fails, ask your bank to which coin vault they belong to. Keep working your way outward until you get a different answer.

I did a google search for my bank "Wells Fargo" and "armored services New Jersey" and it turns out I came up with a website loomisfargo.com which links directly to the loomis website.
I looked and there are two locations on that website and I am somewhat in the middle between them. Assuming that I would have to travel 20 minutes one way or the other to change vaults, how do I find out which vault is which if they are both probaby Loomis?
Is there a security issue in asking for the phone number of the vault they use? I could use that as a way to contact the vault and maybe match the phone number or just flat out ask them their location.
Or do you think that might raise suspicions in todays post 911 world?

Look, you call your banks not the coin respositories and ask where they send/order their coins from.
