This is the coin I posted about in my hello post where I ordered a cheesy trinket coin for fun for 3$s and got this one instead but didnt realize how valueable the mistake was until atleast a month later. Its about 39 to 40mm in diamater I'd have to check exactly. According to another listing of the same design but on a different size coin on ebay its either bronze or bronze clad. My questions though are these: In terms of talking about this type of coin on here how do I describe it? Its listed as a "Challenge Coin" on ebay but I dont see a listing for that here. Its a really nice coin in my opinion so its something I'm glad I have and could see others collecting especially if people are into the whole 2012 prophecy thing even just for fun. Its not really a token or a medal I know that. So not sure what to call it. Its obviosly not currency though the different size on ebay sells for anything from 13 dollars up to 20. I love it though I wouldnt buy another one. Curious what you guys think of it. Its not something people thumb their nose at around here is it? Kinda like "Why would you collect junk like that its not even a real coin." :D Thanks!

I would just call it a medal or medallion. It isn't really a coin because it doesn't have a value listed on it. It really isn't a "Challenge Coin." (You can read more about them here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Challenge_coin)As far as people thumbing their noses, most people here spend money to get money. If you think about that it is kind of dumb so you are in good company. If you have a nice odd-ball collection of things like this take a picture of it, do a write up with any information and make a post for people to see. Members here like that. People have made posts wooden nickels and square coins in the past. Also certain types of commemortive medallions, different types of tokens, casino chips, elongated cents, etc. So I doubt anyone will say anything negitive. Even if some one doesn't collect what you do most of us here are happy to see somebody enjoy collecting and sharing what they like.

I would call it a medal. A religious medal, to be more precise, although the 2012 Doomsday movement isn't even organized enough to classify as a "cult", let alone an organized religion. I have to admit some confusion, however, as to why they choose to illustrate the Mayan doomsday prophecy with a reproduction of the Aztec Sun Stone. It's kinda like somebody painting George Washington waving an Australian flag while crossing the Delaware.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis

I think its because the two are easily confused. I know I wasnt paying real close attention to which was which until you said something.

Pretty much the same reason that people in the United States persist in calling themselves "American", thus ignoring Canada, Central America, South America, the Caribbean area, etc. ... cultural and historical ignorance. And maybe arrogance.

pls, that is like the test they give in high school:
1: Everyone from New Jersey must fill out form 5012c.1. You are from New York. Do you need to fill out form 5012c.1?

This one is only 40mm though not 44. I measured it because I got a case for it. And its definitely not antique bronze. Its a the same shine and color of some gold clad bars I bought on ebay and its the same shine and color as some gold flake I have. I dont doubt its probably bronze made to look gold but its definitely not antique bronze. I'll try and get some better shots now that I figured out how to use white set hehe. Now that I got my shiny "You've posted 50 posts!" email hehe, I can post external links: This one looks more like it. I guess I should weigh it though now thats it cased I'll have to weigh an empty case and hope there isn't much difference in the cases. http://www.ebay.com/itm/GOLD-MAYAN-...em2320a19c5c

Ahh. Weighed it this evening. The case + coin + tape - case is 1.007 Troy Ounces. My dad says the tape really could weigh the difference. (8 small pieces in 4 corners.) so my guess is it really is the 1 troy ounce gold plated from that listing just I didnt get it from them because I've never shopped from them. Still dont know where I got it from. Hope I didnt deprive someone of a personal favorite or something. :(

I saw that circular pattern about the doomsday date on the mayan calendar, it got featured in "ancient aliens" history tv series. very interesting.. if there's one medalion that shows Roger Roger going up riding a rocket, then that becomes a medal set and increases the value.. which increases my interest level. Nice coin! I like it too ! thanks for sharing
