Gros Tournois - Philip IV (1285-1314) France

Weight: 3.5 g.
Diameter: 25 mm

I have some doubts about the authenticity, mainly because the weight and the edge (edge "perfectly" round), but I'm not expert in French hammered coins. The coin also shows signs of being cleaned.
Thanks in advance for any help.

A quick search tells me being perfectly round is not unusual, but you are at least .5g underweight and from the picture it doesn't look like good silver.

I doubt it is an authentic French Royal issue, but most of Europe was making copies of these of varying quality and metal content.

The design details look strange on some places indeed. But mostly on the cross side ...
It could just be a proper coin, corroded.

Did you bought that one from pepechancla ? I seem to recognize the picture there.
If it's him, he is a serious collector, but had some fakes in his collection (at least one cob). I have some coins from him coming from serious auctions houses before, and in excellent quality.

I forgot to mention that the surface of the coin have heavy traces of an abrasive clean, looking like Billon.

I agree, details look strange on some places. Below I let pictures form others Gros Tournois to compare the design. I bought this Gros Tournois from a Belgium auction house.

CGB is not from Belgium, they are in the center of Paris :)
Actually, they are the biggest french coin specialist and auction house.

What I don't like in your coin is that it looks smooth on both side, as if it had been cast.
Maybe it was just harshly cleaned, but I don't like this general look/color.
Was I correct about the ebay member you got it from ? If it's that guy, he should be serious ... just show the coin to a numismat of your area and get his advices.

Hello MathieuMa, I bought my coin in a Belgium auction house. Sorry by the confusion, I know that the CGB is from France. I only have used the two pictures from the website (www.cgb.fr), to compare with my coin.

I think everyone else has hit all the main points, but Gros Tournois (and Philip IV issues in particular) seem to turn up more perfectly rounded than other coins of the era.

Thanks a lot for your help. I showed the coin to a friend, old collector of hammered coins, and seem to be authentic. The coin was heavily cleaned and gained with time a "yellow/brown" patina.
