I couldn't tell you how it happened, but it's definantly post-strike damage.

The log and rock to the left of the beaver ends oddly.

Am I imagining details on the rim? It's as if the waterlines in front of the rock (and toward us) are shifted to the rim and way up.

I see what you mean, dialog, but I suspect that the similarity in design there is probably coincidence. Judging by the obverse it looks like the nickel may have been really wedged into something and scraped along.
