So although I'm sure it helps a lot, and let's you avoid digging every ping even with a cheap metal detector you can make some great finds...You don't need to spend a kings ransom...

I have a cheap (well $150, which is cheap for detectors) and fairly old detector, a bounty hunter tracker 2 I bought at dicks sporting goods 6 years ago or so to find a lost pistol that fell while hunting... (yes I found it) and it's been packed away since... Up until a few months ago when I got really into coin collecting after inheriting my fathers and grampa's old collections.. And now I'm addicted... Bad...

So I've only gone out a few times, probably 7 total so far, and have found nothing except old nails, old metal bottle tops and other scrap metal... And the day before yesterday I was talking to a friend I haven't seen in 5+ years and found out that he has an expensive detector and that he finds coins in the town next to mine all the time... (side note.. He doesn't collect coins, he just does it for fun... I'm in the process of buying all his coin finds now) but anyways I was telling him I never find anything.. So he invited me with him and we went out that day to a new spot he wanted to check...

We both started at different areas around the cellar hole and within a half hour and many nails and scraps later this is what came out of the ground... Detected by Me with MY detector... I almost passed out when I saw what it was and the condition it was in... (disclaimer- the pics are HORRIBLE, it's in way better shape than the pic shows, the colors not as bad nor is it porous as the photo appears...)

Cheap-Detector...-Great-Find...
Cheap-Detector...-Great-Find...

So needless to say you can make some pretty great finds with a cheaper detector... Although I might have to buy a better one now... Just because I'm now hooked on detecting for life!!

You should post it in the grading section, there is a big difference between VF-20 and XF-40.

Great find!
I'd put it in the AU details range.

What a sweet find! I just won a Ace 250 off ebay; can't wait to get out with it. I'll be happy to find a silver dime!

I was thinking AU details also... Other people agreed, (in classic US coins) but said environmental damage. I wonder what that does to value. Although its priceless to me as my first find anyways... Just curious...
