Back in the farm field for a bit this morning. I unearthed my 22nd large copper. Still ... no silver. It will happen one day.

Very Nice! Have to blame CCF; just won a Garrett Ace 250 off ebay and I am waiting for it to arrive. Starting off with a less expensive machine to see how I do. If I'm happy, I will graduate up to a more powerful model. Read about yours and everybody else's finds and I have to give it a shot!

That is a cool find. Have you found all 22 in the same area?

I keep the coins that I detected seperate from my regular collection, but even in horrible condition they mean as much as if not more than my graded coins. I found it and without me, that coin may never have seen the light of day again. At least that is how I look at it.

Wow, these are popping up all over lately!! I just made my first detector find (& I have a cheaper bounty hunter tracker 2) 2 days ago and it was a 1820 small date in super condition, I'd say EF-45 to AU-50, And it was packed tight under at least 5" of soil.. Can't believe it's this nice from the ground after about 190 years! Since I never find coins my friend brought me to a new spot with him because he always finds coins.. He's found 5 large cents and a 1800's Seated quarter, I can't remember the date.. So I'm super thankful to him, without him bringing me with him I'd still be digging up nails and scrap metal with no coins to date...
The pics do this no justice, the colors off and it appears porous in the pics and in person it's not... I suck at photographing coins so far...

Do you guys think it's worth sending this one in for grading? Not that I'd ever sell my first find, but I'm curious to see how it'd grade.. Especially after its years in the dirt... Opinions on value? Red Book and NGC's price guide say a lot (NGC says a real lot) and some people on here told me they always value higher than its really worth... I'm still pretty new to this, and grading and value especially so any opinions would be appreciated...

That's really cool we both found almost the same 200 year old coins within days.. Congrats!

I don't know that I'd pay for grading ... but I'm not a slab kind of guy. It'd get AU details, environmental damage. No real point in paying somebody else for that information.

All of these coppers have come from basically 2 estates. The were properties that belonged to brothers in the community.

The most interesting items revovered, one from each farm, are 2 small decorative silver buckles. They were made by the same craftsman using the same technique and tools, and are not hallmarked. There was a tinsmith in this town, ca 1868 .. and his father was a silversmith. I would be willing to bet that Mr Pennington made both of these buckles.

Another notable dig was 2 large cents less than 3 feet apart, both dated 1830. They were found without 100 yards of he site of the first glass making facility in the US.

FWIW ... Yes, published list prices like numismedia, which is NGC's gig, are for 3rd party gradedcoins. Raw coins always sell for less.

That's my understanding of it anyway.

That's what I thought too Chance... That numismedia etc was more for graded coins.. Still new to all of this though. Ya, the only reason I'd send it is to get a better understanding on grading because I wasn't sure (but apparently I was pretty close..) Although it would be nice to say it was worth what they have it listed at.. As in AU small date this coin is a lot.. (although again, being new I have no idea what environmental damage does to value) but I doubt I will as I'm happy with it the way it is, and as my first coin find its worth more to me anyways.
That's why I love this site, because instead of sending it in I can have you guys tell my untrained eye what it grades at.. And then I doesn't have to leave my possession.. I'd worry the whole time it was gone, lol.
So just out of curiosity what does environmental damage do to value?

Congrats on the sweet find.

This is why I'm jealous of folks on the east coast, we almost never find large cents in Oregon.

Of the 40 guys in our club I know of 2 who have ever found one in the entire time they've detected.

Environmental damage always diminishes a coin's value. How much it lowers the value depends on the degree of damage and the relative scarcity of the coin.

Environmental damage varies. The 1820 you dug came out of a very sweet soil, while the one I dug came from the highly acidic soil of the coal fields of SW Pa. Your coin still has market value ... mine, not so much. In fact, I tossed it into the tumbler with the other wheats and modern coins I have dug to remove some of the encrustation. I have tried every manner of chemical concoction, and if there's anything left of the coin, tumbling it is still the best way to make it even halfway presentable.

Ihave only to dig the 1793 large cent to have dug every major variety. I've dug lettered edge and plain edge Liberty Cap Cents, Draped Bust, one classic head, numerous Matron Heads, and a couple of the Coronet style. I've also dug one classic head Half Cent, an 1810, and 1 draped bust Half Cent, so bad I can't read a date on it.

It's fun ... and I am holding out hope for a piece of federal silver yet.

I'm surprised that any are found. Population was pretty low when large cents were in common circulation.

Cool finds. Nighthawk are you close to Vancouver? There is a huge area where Fort Vancouver was located. I don't know anything about metal detecting on federal property but the area around there has lots of parks and grassy areas...

Turns out this is an 1831. I thought it was when I first dug it ... then I thought, no it's a 37. It's definitely an 1831. I'm going to leave it in the tumbler overnight. I'll posta picture tomorrow.

The chin isn't right for 37. I'd say 27 or 31.

It is fun. Lot of work too. My finds so far, a 1968 cent and 30 crushed beer cans.
