This was the only year the 20 cent coin was minted in Canada. Is it a good investment piece? And how rare is the medal variety compared to the regular one? Just looking for some general info :)

There are usually about 30 of these listed on ebay at any given time, and usually about half that many 1870 quarters.Which one is already overpriced IMO? Medal alignment is quite scarce.

Well, according to Canadian Coin News the 1858 coin alignment in MS60 trends at $1200. My coin is in AU58 bleach white and a super example. I understand that the coin was not popular when issued and there appears to be some snobbery amongst collectors concerning this variant. This forum says my photo is to large to upload, sorry. I like them. Hard to go wrong with a one year type that looks nice, has a pretty low mintage and that was unpopular at the time it was used (eg- many were recalled/melted).

Rob Turner has an excellent write up on the Canadian 1858 coinage, including the 20-cent piece, in his first book.

A must have for every type set, keeps the demand side up.As a one year type they were hoarded by the bushel and despite the recall and melting more than enough survive to outpace the demand.

^^^ Neat
@DBM: You hit it. Everyone HAS to have one, and so it is the demand more than the supply that is the price driver. There are millions of unique paintings and other artwork. So what? Without demand even unique rarity means absolutely nothing.
As for the medal version, it's depressing how few people actually know about the axis of coins. It drives me nuts in some token listings, for example, where the axis IS the critical piece of information that is needed, but the seller is clueless.
I wonder how many 20c medal get sold without the seller even knowing what they had? Or the buyer realizing they got one?
The supply is thus a bit fuzzy.

It is a neat coin and quite popular, however, investment? No.
Investment implies profit - you will not make money with this coin. You will no lose either. The coin has an established market value and will stay there.

fascinating article by Rob Turner on the melting of 20 cent coins. Could it be that instead of around 300.000 1858s surving melting only a little over 7000 survived? I consider them one of my favorite early Canadian coins and am thankful to have a single bueatiful example The other contraversy with these coins is the disputed mintage figures of 730.000 or so vs 750.000

There really is no dispute on the 20 cent mintage. There are multiple highly credible surviving documents that place the mintage at 730,392. The mint reports of the late 1800's published 750,000 which was based on the order size of 30,000 pounds sterling in 20 cent pieces. I provided the documentation in my first book.
