Was one of the emperors high on my want list for a while, but I finally have a coin of Commodus! Aside from a few imperfections, I think it is a very attractive coin and can't wait to add it to my collection when it arrives. It will be my 6th denarius.

Commodus AR Denarius

Obv: L AEL AVREL COMM AVG P FEL, laureate head right
Rev: P M TR P XVII IMP VIII COS VII P P, Pietas seated and reaching out to child, holding sceptre, star in left field, Rome mint, RIC 236

Commodus-Denarius

He sure looks different than the Commodus that comes to mind!

Late reign Commodus like yours often are ragged flans with cracks. You can get nice round ones from his earlier days while Marcus was alive but the later things make it look like the mint did not care. Your 'imperfections' are not all that bad. When you have cracks from opposite sides, I suggest careful handling to avoid a break.

He looks so tired in these late portraits. Perhaps being a god was stressful?

I just found that one on Vcoins (it's definately your coin!)

Anyway, I am adding that one to my list, it's definately a good value purchase, a nice silver coin that won't break the bank.

It is a nice looking coin despite it's flaws. As Doug said, though, be careful that it doesn't snap in two.

Commodus is an interesting figure (as are many of the Roman Emperors). One can find coins with young portraits or older looking portraits such as yours. Here is one struck 177 AD. the first year he was elevated as Caesar. It is in much worse shape than yours:

Nice coin of a strange dude. Even though he was truly monsterous in the arena, I kind of admire that it even occurred to him to have this made:

Commodus-Denarius

I used to have a denarius with a similar crack. It was so fragile that I don't even know what broke it. Just fell apart in it's flip one day, maybe from just opening the binder. Nice coin though, grats.

Yep it's that one! But it was also listed on ebay (that's where I found it) at the same price with a make offer option. I sent an offer and got it for $10 less!

Even what was being asked on Vcoins seemed reasonable to me, to get it for less I would say you snared yourself a bargain!
