I just got my Krause Publications 2012 Standard Catalog of World Coins 1901-200 39th Edition "software" and I am not impressed.
Its just a pdf file :(.
On top of that the cover of box clearly said "Portable and Searchable." Well yeah it sure is portable. I could email it to myself if I felt like it.
But searchable? Every single word I put into the pdf search box turns up nothing. I mean come on would 'penny' show something? I even tried 'Krause' while looking at the word Krause on their title page.
Dont tell me their idea of 'searchable' for a CD is going to the index and thumbing through 2354 pdf pages?
This is pathetic. If seachable doesn't work I may consider fighting them on it and returning it and getting the actual books. I cant even take it to a printer and get it printed because its copyrighted material and they barf on that even though I legally could.
Ive contacted them through their website but I have no idea if I'll get a response.
Any comments? Or is mostly likely that I am just stuck with it?
Thanks! (To you guys for help hehe. No confusion. :D)

I bought mine for half price, WITHOUT the software.
The dealer saw the opportunity to buy in a large job lot of books only, and to sell the book only at half price.
I find it just a quick to open the book, which is less than a metre from my keyboard. My Krause references cover the whole period from 1601 to 2001.

Have you tried to search the word "cent", I have the PDF as well as the book, and searching works just fine for me.

Ahhhhh... Ok. So the search isn't just any text, its search key words they have put into the system. because cent does work and "half penny" shows an entry for "Halfpenny" (without the space).
Ok. Thank you. Much better hehe.
Oh and I bought it straight from Krause. Wasnt terribly expensive compared to the paper versions. Guess I could have looked around maybe. Didnt think of it.
Thanks for the help as always!

Yes. Seems to sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. I tried searching for a word clearly as a coin name on random pages and it didnt work and I came to make this post. I went back to re-do the search to get an exact example and now it works. Both in the 1901-2000 and the 2001-date worlds.
So maybe there is a bug in the current PDF software, what PDF reader do you use? I am using "PDF Complete Special Edition" which I think came with my machine (Windows 7).

Schwanke, I hope things are working fully for you now.
I use the 1601-1700 CD and I never have any problems. I can search on a contributor (Mish), Duit, a ruler (Ernst), even a monetary amount.

It works for the most part. I noticed that it seems to be 'indexed' a certain way I cant figure out. Some search terms work, some dont and sometimes it combines or split the term to give a broader result list.
I also noticed how sometimes I have to search for something, have it fail, close and re-open the document and then search terms work.
So its possible its whatever PDF reader is default on a Windows 7 HP machine is buggy.
I havnt had a lot of time with it recently since I got sucked into coin roll hunting american coins hehe but I am sure I will get back into using it and am glad I bought it. I know its a good investment when the time is right.
Thanks for following up.

You should be able to search for any word or amount that appears on at least 1 page; conversely if a term doesn't appear anywhere in the document, a search for that will fail. If you have to close your reader program after a failed search then the most likely cause is program corruption or possibly, low memory.
