This probably isn't worth a topic all its own, but some of y'all may remember me angsting over needing a bigger shoebox for my stuff and running out of old flip packaging to use as makeshift boxes. Well, Whitman had this "special beginner's numismatist offer" for 100 flips and their large storage box, for $7--two boxes of 35 flips cost me more than that down at Hobby Lobby. I'm sorting my flipped cents into it now and just had to share. It looks so pretty and not half-baked! . . . she said, right before using the newly-empty flip containers to store still more coins. Anybody have any further storage tips? I don't discriminate with my cents (modern, wheat, IHC, and Canadian are all stored together), so the collection there is rather large, but things like proofs and silver require smaller containers. Should I just stick with cannibalized flip containers for these?

Doh....keep them Canadians seperate....the US coins will start hearing about the coffee at Tim Horton and head north of the border. :)

I'll remind the US coins about the coffee at Circle K and they'll come right back.

Just finished sorting all of my cents into the new box. It's so pretty and compact, I may have to pick up another to do the "silver" in and just use the two separate sides to keep things tidy. And then I can stop having stupid little plastic boxes labeled "non-cents."

One tip I have for you right now is be careful of using shoe boxes. The paper they are made of could contain harsh chemicals or residue that can damage your coins over time.
I use food safe plastic containers such as Ziploc and tupperware which I find at auctions or yard sales. I also use coleslaw and potato salad buckets to put the coins I just places into 2x2 fold-overs in until I get the time (which is hard to come by these days)to label them up and get them organized.

And one more thing.

@CelticKnot: As soon as I remember what I did with my camera after the concert the other night. I found all of my jewelry in my purse, so I either tucked it there or one of my friends did, but the joke goes that my airline carryon is smaller than my purse, so my camera is still lost (if someone was kind enough to put away a highly-coveted piece of limited-edition jewelry for me and get me home safely, I assume my two-year-old point-and-shoot is still around somewhere). So, give me a day--I'll probably find it hunting for my wallet or something today. @Tim: I use old Keds boxes, which contain oxygen absorbers (yay!). It's not a great solution for years and years, but I needed a container. Plastic would be good if it had sharper corners, but those little round bits on the bottom of all the containers I've ever seen would drive me crazy--that's why I'm thinking a second Whitman box might be a good upgrade now. I have my coins in flips, which are stacked inside old flip packaging, and those stacks are stacked in the shoebox in between old silica packets. It's unwieldy and a pain every time I get a new coin and have to redo all my labels. I don't think it'll do a whole lot of damage to circulated coins immediately (key word "think"), but the cons are starting to outweigh the pros as my collection gets bigger. EDIT: Found my camera! (I knew I could count on my friends. It was in its case and everything.) Pics have been taken, but I have to leave in five minutes for work--I'm uploading them now and you can expect them when I get home tonight.
