I recently received an in circulation 1996 s mint quarter, the weight of which is about 6.3 grams. (give or take, weighed on a beam scale). The coin has a raised rim on the lower left hand side, and is ridged. It appears to have very little circulation, little wear and no other noticeable flaws. I was encouraged to post this based on a post I had read by Morgans dad about a 1996 D mint quarter without a noticeable copper core. Later in the topic this was posted : "Ive been reading the posts about the 1996 quarter without copper core. I too have found a 1996 Quarter that looks like its aluminum. I have a few silver coins and it doesn't look like silver to me. Is the weight the deciding factor? I am not a collector, and have no knowledge about these things, but I have never seen a coin like this one. Its a 1996 "s" Quarter." - Dougw. Unfortunately I cannot provide pictures as I have no means, but I was wondering what the rarity would be on this proof coin with a raised edge. I am a fledgling numismatist and do appreciate all feedback, but reading through posts I think I found a gold mine in this forum.

Let me be the first to say . I for one can't help you but I'm sure someone with more experience will chime in. A picture would be most helpful.

Wow this is the fastest I have ever gotten a reply on any type of forum, very impressed. I will work on getting images of the coin but I appreciate the quick replys!! *edit* and thank you carmykle & numismo for the warm welcome, and also I forgot to mention that my quarter also shows no signs of a copper core, and is not magnetic .

Drakey, there were silver proof sets made in 1996 in San Francisco, and 6.3 grams would be the correct weight for a quarter. Does it look proof at all? It isn't all that uncommon to find proofs in circulation. I've found several Kennedy half proofs, and a proof dime once. None were silver though, so you should consider yourself lucky. I can't give you an answer on the rim though without pix. -Tom

He said it's a 96-S, that would make it a proof. The weight is 6.3 grams, the correct weight for a silver quarter. The government has made silver proof sets that include silver quarters since 1992. The quarter in question does not show a copper core. Add it all up and you have a 1996-S silver proof quarter.
Congratulations.

Alright, I have painstakingly gotten some images off a 4 megapixel camera and a 7 megapixel camera. Both are crappy I know, its the best I could manage. In the first two pictures the coin in question is on the left with a 2000 south carolina State Quarter on the right for comparison, the shadow of the raised rim is visible although again... poor quality photos. I hope someone can make something of it, and as always I appreciate all feedback. *edit* happy to be a part of this forum *edit*

While I applaud your efforts in providing the photos, there's not much anyone can say other than it appears to be silver. Need better pics to really help. But, if the weight matches what has been already said about the Silver Quarter...there's a good chance you found a silver quarter. It's not uncommon to find silver proofs that have made their way into circulation. I've found a few in junk piles at flea markets. Good Luck!
