Just got this, how I got it is another story, which I will post in CRH later when I am finished checking my sweet haul! This 37 wheatie is a beautiful silvery color, not magnetic, no signs of since plating/tampering, and the size is perfect Please help!

You can always weigh it if you think it's made of some other metal. I'm going with cleaned.

Cleaned? Why would that make it silver? It looks natural, and the detailing is really great. I don't have a gram scale unfortunately...

It really doesn't seem like it. I need a scale.

You can pick up a scale relatively cheap on ebay. Chem lab experiment most likely.

Until you weigh the coin, everything else is mere speculation. Lacking a scale, you can always set up a balance beam with another known bronze cent.

Amida be right, probably. I would be careful with this coin. Don't heat it. Wash your hands after handling. When I was a kid we could (and did) buy liquid mercury by the ounce at the local drug store... fun to play with, looks funny when it rolls around on your palm and feels funny as it slithers away between your fingers. The fun part was to use it to coat coins and make them nice and silvery shiny. Mercury is terribly poisonous, don't try this at home. (oh yeah, I forgot. The Government now makes us all buy CFL light bulbs, which are filled with mercury vapor... go figure.)

I still buy regular bulbs. I guess they forgot about us out this way.

So that penny weighs 3.13g. Really disappointed, though I know you guys are generally right about this stuff (why else would I be asking here?) but I still had my fingers crossed. The picture doesn't do it justice. Who ever played around with this coin did an amazing job. I have seen what zinc plating looks like. I'm pretty sure it wasn't that, but I don't know. On the off chance that it's some mercury compound, I wash my hands after I touch it, and I keep it in a 2''x1.5'' ziplock baggy. Maybe they were practicing counterfeiting or something. Wish I had a better camera to show you guys what I mean. Oh well, at least I have a scale now! And I know the bidding process on ebay, I was only a seller before. Now I'm prepared to buy!

Just fyi....washing your hands is a good idea regardless...but it is the act of handling it that is bad...you absorb the mercury through your skin directly. Use gloves in the future

Good tips. I handled it as if it was a hot potato, only touching it to get it on the scale. But your right, not worth the risk.
