I'm throwing out a lot of stuff that you professionals will probably laugh at, but I am learning and I am very grateful for all of your help. This site is awesome. Here is yet another coin that I don't understand. This is a 1878 P with a few oddities. There is a pattern from the hairline out to the edge of the coin that I think is pitting but I am not sure. The texture there is rough. I don't think it is from any cleaning, because the wear marks appear to be over top of the roughness. Also I have read about the
VAM 23 with the top of the P in PLURIBUS squished, and this appears to have that, but does not have the doubled lips. Also the third star from the date on the left is half missing, this is right at the cut off point of the pitting area. There is a lot of wear on this coin, but I dont think the missing star is from wear. Any Ideas what this is?
