Has anyone seen this VAM? It has die cracks across to tops of most of the lettering on the reverse and Has five die clashes. The cracks go from E in UNITED to the second T in STATES, and from the O in OF to the M in AMERICA. Then it has five die clashes. One large one to the left of the top point on the right wreath, three very faint ones to on the right of the top of the left wreath, aand one more between the IN and GOD above the left wing. The strike on this coin is very weak some of the stars on the obverse are barely there. I haven't been able to find a description on VAM world to match this. Check Vamworld.com. It looks like where's alot of VAM's associated with the 1889. Don't know which one you have there but the site should give you some place to start. Here's the link: http://vamworld.wikispaces.com/1889-P+VAMs

I have Checked on vamworld.com, but I didn't find any pictures or descriptions that matched. Thanks for the link. Maybe I have a new variety.

I have more details to add. I just noticed that there are die clash marks on the obverse of the coin also. When comparing these marks to the Morgan die clash guide, I noticed that the marks on the obverse and reverse were caused by each other, as if the die press went off without a coin blank in it. I still haven't been able to find a VAM listing for it.If anybody has any other suggestions they would be greatly appreciated. Image: IMG_1360 marked.jpg91.3 KB. Neither die cracks or clashes are enough to earn VAM designation; you could build a date/mint mark set of each, they're so common on Morgans. A clash which involves letter transfer is of significance, as is a die crack which has become a full break with displaced metal. This is an interesting coin, but a relatively common one.

All the clash marks are from one clash. Multiple clashes would result in repeated marks. Unless there is a transferred letter, there is no special VAM number. Clashes are cool, but no premium for them unless there are letters involved. The cracks are just cracks, cool but not breaks. They need to be breaks for a VAM.

Thanks for the feedback I'm catching on slowly. I am looking for a good reference book to learn more about VAM's, especially about Morgans, any suggestions?

The place to start is the Comprehensive Catalog and Encyclopedia of Morgan & Peace dollars. Being written by the gentlemen whose names form the acronym VAM, it's the authoritative reference. You want the 4th Edition, published in 1992. This is an amazing reference source, containing an enormous amount of information about both Morgan and Peace dollars. Unfortunately, half of all known VAM's have been identified since the book was published. First, here's a link to what I think is a decent price on one of those: http://cgi.ebay.com/Morgan-Peace-Do...th_W0QQitemZ220074634677QQcategoryZ530QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQcmdZViewItem If you take time and look around, you might find one cheaper. Now, for the newer VAM's. Here you'll find a listing of all those discovered since 1992, with descriptions and pics: http://www.ashmore.com/vamupdate/

Wow, there's a lot of information on that second link. You got me interested in the VAM's when you mentioned that the 1921 Morgan I posted on the grading forum might be a new one. I'm still looking through the known 1921 VAM's, but haven't found one like mine yet.

I think the pattern of polishing on yours is unique; it just remains to be seen whether it's significant enough to qualify as a new VAM or not.
