I haven't posted in nearly a year, but at another member's urging I wanted to post this coin and ask for opinions on what the forum thinks the market value of this coin would be. The coin has been slabbed by ICG as F-12 details (damaged). The authenticity is therefore not really in debate. I also personally believe the grade on this coin is correct and is fairly obvious as it is very typically F-12. The question is, what is this coin worth. The hit is pretty nasty, but at least it isn't on an important detail like the date, mintmark, or main device. Color is original uncleaned. I'm worried that people will use the "what grade would I rather have as opposed to this one with damage" approach and call this an net G or even net AG and value it very low. That would be quite unfortunate for me as F-12 is nearly a condition rarity as most of this date has been certified VG and lower. The hit is bad, but it's not a "kill 75% of its value" problem IMO. What do you all think.

IMO, I would rather have a problem free G or VG coin due to the large and distracting damage. So, if I were looking at buying it, I would value it at Good or VG. IMO, probably a G6 value. However, if a buyer didn't mind the damage as much, then they may value it at VG. It's going to depend on the demand. But overall, I think a value at G6 would be fair.

I would not buy it. I think you have a very limited market of buyers willing to purchase the coin in the price range you are hoping for. That is a very large and distracting scratch.

I guess this is worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it. With out knowing what you have invested in it I would say throw it on ebay with an open of $.99 and let the bidding frenzy begin. If you open it it up at what you think it is worth you may not get a bid. It would definitely be a decent hole filler as far as the damage to the obverse is concerned. Oh, and welcome back.

Looks like you have taken it out of the slab? ?
I think it maybe a FA-2 value is more like it. Sorry to say that, but a damage coin of that type is more like a hole filler. IMO!

Quote: The hit is bad, but it's not a "kill 75% of its value" problem IMO Unfortunately, it really is that bad. The coin does not just have a major ding, I can see by the wear patterns that the whole coin is bent/warped. Given that, it is still a desirable key date and would probably fetch something approaching $1000 as long as it is still in the ICG slab.

I agree with the sentiment of having a problem free VG8/10 than this. This coin is worth only what you think it is as it should be to any buyer. To me, it's worthless if I can get the problem free VG instead. To you however, it could be worth owning at whatever you consider a reasonable price.

Thank you for the responses.
To answer the indirect questions that have been posed regarding the coin;
It is still in the ICG slab, these pictures were taken before I sent the coin off many months ago.
I know the wear patterns would suggest more extreme damage, but the coin is essentially flat. It probably has been bent about 2% or so, which would be enough to make it take on wear strangely, but it's not noticeable.
Oooooh, pricing it as an FA-2 seems rough. That coin often wouldn't even have the mintmark defined well enough, or at all, to authenticate.
I don't know, the coin really doesn't look that horrible to me. It's hard for me to say because I'm not in the market for one. I am pretty sure I'd rather have a VG over this one, but I'd probably chose this one over a G-4. I suppose I'd value it as a G-6. I just like to actually see details on a coin. I would say that I am generally not turned off by damage as much as some as I see it as part of the wear, the history if you may, of the coin. Cleaning, on the other hand, offends me more so than most. That's another debate entirely.
