Have bought an '06 ASE ann. set (no reverse proof) as I have that (rp) in a PCGS slab already - my question is this, do I trust a coin shop to break open slab & return to original plastic holder ... or try this procedure myself? I much prefer the mint OGP of the ASE proofs to the graded slab, just call me crazy that way. What might they charge to do this for me -

Slowly place the soon to be freed coin in a vise, JUST the top of the slab, where the coin is not,end to end into the vise and slowly tighten the vise till you hear small cracks and release the slab and continue the procedure checking after hearing cracks( you will with practice learn to relate the sounds with the slab letting your coin go) and YOU DO NOT have to smash the slab into pieces, You can with your hands slowly crack the slab apart, after you hear and see the slabs cracks, remove the cracked slab from the vise and with your hands break away the pieces and doing this over a fluffy blanket, just in case of a premature fall out, the slab will get to the point where the area around your coin, will slip apart and while keeping the slab flat, broken side facing up, so the coin stays safely in the slab remove the large broken part covering your coin, WALA, a problem free removal.

I have done Many, Many break-outs and NEVER had placed the resident coin in any danger of being harmed, DIY......Good Luck, Mike....PS, IF any of this sounds beyond your abilities, out source the project to a friend who is familiar with shop tools!!

a REAL vise, or one w/wood blocks in it? - have a good steel bench vise in the garage.

Going to give it a shot this weekend when relaxed, not just after work some evening.

I saved this to remind me not to try and do it quicker...this is from MANY years ago and my attempt to use a table saw to cut the slab edge off....it did work quite a few times but that one time that the slab got caught and well...here it is...(the coin was not toned originally)..I don't think it will grade very high

I almost "die'd" from that "crack"...the slab shot from the blade and right through a window in my garage....

To set free TPG coins, I just use bolt cutters.
A couple corners cut off and the slab will pop right open.

I am thinking of Dremel on all corners, then wrap in towel & tap w/hammer on edges until it cracks open, keeping soft cloth handy to let it fall out into.
