To try to become a more informed collector I bought 2 books on currency values. Problem is for an 1923 UNC Speelman/White I get 2 very different values. Official Blackbook Price Guide to United States Paper Money 2013 says $195. The Official Red Book A Guide to United States Paper Money Third Edition says $110. So how does one know the value of paper currency?

Ancient Chinese proverb says a man with two clocks never knows what time it is.

Get used to that with multiple sources. A good barometer is to check what notes are selling for and use the books as a guideline more or less.

Notes seem to sell higher from what I can tell because people don't differentiate between different versions of say 1923 $1 silver certificates so less valuable ones seem to get better than expected prices because they seems like values compared to the really valuable ones which only experienced bidders seem to bid on.

Searching ebay for completed listings might help zero in on a value, but that can have large ranges too.

Or you can check currency dealers and see what they are selling them for. And sometimes, you just have to average out the price, when using different resources.

Another good valuation reference is a computer program, Track&Price.

It has past auctions/ebay sales and updated valuations for most notes.

Since I do a lot of coin auctions I can tell you that the values we all read ,are if you can of course, find a buyer....That said...The 1923 is a common note....Large notes are hot right now....Even the more rare signature combos don't get that much premium at auction,,,But collectors love them,,,,I do...Most of the time here ,,1923 SC...speelman/white ...VF goes around $30....unc..$75....Takes a lot of leg time to keep up with currency values....I think the last few years have been good buying times,,,still lots of good deals out there....IMHO

I would love to find some 1923s $1 UNC for $75 all shipping and buyers premiums included.
