I don't know enough about Three Cent pieces to know if it's fake or not, but it looks like it has some nice die cracks on the reverse.

All the die breaks make me feel like the coin might be real but hard to tell from sure from these photos. The coin appears to have been cleaned and it looks like there might be some rim damage on the obverse. This is a common date so doubt it is counterfeit.

I would agree with IndianGoldEagle. The 1881 date looks authentic; the 81 for this year's punches were kind of crooked.

I don't see any obvious counterfeit characteristics, but your date does appear to be much lower and closer to the denticles than mine...

On the other hand, IMO, the reverse die cracks lend credence to this coin's authenticity.

Here's mine, if you'd like to compare...

I think you made a good decision passing on it as the coin had problems.

Yes, it is pretty normal. The dies for these nickel (an extremely hard metal) coins wore out quickly and fine details were lost pretty early on. Also you'll find many die cracks appeared as the dies deteriorated much quicker than the US Mint had been used to with copper and silver coins with which they they had much more experience.
