Hi there,
I found a 2006 Lincoln in pocket change a few weeks back... at first it looked like a mis-placed and inverted 'S' but high res pics confirmed that it is more of an '8' I corresponded with a error specialist who was very informative and observed that this is not a dropped letter since as you can see that it is more of an '8' and there really is no marked depression (so there was no substantial amount of metal involved) - he referred to what he could see from my scan as possibly 'coincidental toning' - I didn't bug him much past that because I felt bad that I wasted his time to that point. I have collected and have been looking at coins in change for about 30 years now and have never seen anything like this and am hoping to see if anyone else has some opinions... to me it really looks mint-produced, perhaps some die grease that kept its form?

All opinions appreciated

Welcome!! Great pic, thanks for sharing.

I don't see any evidence of raised metal, so I am inclined to say toning. Very cool!!

thanks for your reply - can 'coincidental toning' be mint or non-mint related? The figure - 8 is dimensionally very close to the zero in the date (yet twisted as though one end of it stuck causing a wrapping affect and then the '8')... not even close to my specialty but this coin is really curious to me.

It could be from incomplete mixing of metal for the planchet. It could be some kid with candy on his fingers. That's the problem, you can never be totally sure what caused anything like that to occur. The fun part is that it is really neat, but everything else about it is total speculation at this point. Enjoy it

it doesn't look like an 8 to me. it looks more like two circles if it was an 8 it would be touching in the center.
i will agree with the transfer tone
