I wrote the entire section, including the introductory paragraphs, for Bill Cross. Most of those photos are of my coins.

Royal Silver, SPP-Ottawa is "the" authority on nick dollars. It's nice to see his research published in Charlton. A couple of us did the Large Cent section in the 65th edition. There is a lot of experience and expertise hanging out here :)

I finally got a chance to peruse the latest catalog.
The section on the nickel dollars was very informative, to say the least!
Good job, SPP!

Use the store inventory search - I did just now, only to discover that my local Coles finally got them in. Off to Coles

I would say my inspiration for the nickel dollar series, came from part of an article that Tom Becker wrote (maybe back in 2005?):

http://www.canadiancoin.com/coin_ar...t&title=+Tom

But, I ignored one small sentence of his article...

Quote:
Don't bother with the varieties.

I could not help myself - I am a coin collector, how could I possibly ignore varieties...

I have not heard any news from Tom Becker recently, I hope he is well.

I don't want to spoil the ending for those who haven't read the nickel dollars section yet, but I think the most significant aspect is the intuitive new variety numbering convention. At a glance you can tell the year, surface, finish, and variety number. With the addition of denomination, this format could be used to describe all Canadian coinage. I hope it catches on. Great stuff, SPP!

I just got my copy today! I tried at Coles yesterday, but it was not on the shelf. But today it was and I was pretty excited to see it sitting on the shelf.

Well my last copy was from 2006 so I think I'm do.

I got the 67th issue and picked up the 2013 Volume 2 Collector and Maple Leaf Issues from Cole's this afternoon.

It's a lot better than my old copy, very nice work SPP we should get you to autograph them.

Roger, I miss Tom's wit, stories and perspective as well. The hobby lost a great mind when his health prevented him from participating. I don't know his status either but I hope all is OK.

I think many of us took Tom's advice on things. One I took to heart is; "stockpile key dates in problem free, circulated grades." Since then, I have picked up quite a few Canadian and NF key date Victorian cents. Closest I have come to buying coins for investment, rather than pleasure.

I haven't had an e-mail conversation with him for about 3 or 4 years now.
