Came across this coin on ebay last weekend and wanted to get some opinions. Is it damage or a true error?

I agree with you biokemist and I already knew what it was, that's why I reported it three days ago to ebay but it still listed. In fact I've reported 2 damaged coins that were listed as errors in the past month and nothing was ever done.I'm beginning to wonder if ebay helps the hobby or hurts it?

The reverse has a D mintmark. Now why would somebody efface the obverse of a Denver Mercury dime... I just can't imagine a reason...

the reason I would think is to make a dollar out of a badly damaged dime. surly melt value is worth at least that much. don't make cents! it sucks someone would deface a merc though!

In fairness to the seller, many people who deal with coins just don't know much or anything about errors or are just misinformed. Often the seller will automatically think an error is genuine, if it's on a genuine coin, which is not always true. In this case, this seller says his 'coin guy' informed him that it was not a cull. Also, the seller has a 14-day money back return policy.
