Hello all! I had a quick question.. I had found a 1941 wheatie a few years back and saw that the 1 after the 4 was slanted, so I decided to keep it just in case. Well recently I have seen multiple pennies with the same "error". I did some further research and found more pictures of more people with the same exact thing on different forums, and I've even seen people trying to sell them on ebay.. Could this possibly be a semi common mint error for this date? Or coincidentally could all of these pennies some how get the same PMD? This one really has my head hurting.

Not an error, just metal displacement damage from a counting/rolling machine.

I wonder why there are so many 1941's with this PMD... Weird!

It typically affects the outer date digit so you will see similar damage on many coins. Most numbers end up almost mangled beyond recognition but "1"s seem to just get pushed at an angle but remain intact otherwise.

If the area in question is parallel to the rim, then it is damaged by a coin roll crimper.

Hi chefhemi13

I just got on the CCF yesterday so just noticed your post. I have another version with apparently the same date. Would welcome thoughts if this is in fact a 1941. Note the swirl of the movement.

Commenting on the original post I think this might be what caused me to think I had 2 1983 copper pennies (that were actually 1982). Both three's had damage that at first glance mangled the 2 into what looked like a slightly mangled 3. Kind of a 'at first glance it could go either way but leaned towards 3' kind of thing. Either way I just weighed them and they were copper and didnt realize about the near impossiblity of a copper 83 lol.
