Came across a listing for an 1804 newspaper. It had an article about mint production. Here's a quote from the end:

Quote:
Many of the coins of the United States have found their way to Great-Britain; where they are in good credit and readily received.

I was able a few years back to repatriate an 1898-S dime from Great Britain.
This year and mint is notorious for having been sent to the Philippines after the
Spanish-American War. They come back in high grade but cleaned.
I can only wonder how such a decent coin made its way across the Pond.
Perhaps a Brit took a tour of the American West and took it home as a souvenir.

Might not have to travel quite so far. One of the reasons they stopped minting Draped Bust Dollars is that they were slightly lighter than Spanish milled dollars, but in the Caribbean, they were trading one for one. Speculators would take a load of US dollars down there and return with those pieces of eight, and take them back to the Mint, to be made in to Draped Busts. Repeat as necessary! Anybody want to head for the Bahamas on a Draped Bust dollar hunt?

I do not think that there is any hope that you will get your coins back.

Those less than .900 fine silver dollars and half dollars were most probably melted down, a little extra silver added, then recycled into good British .925 silver currency.

I agree, that debased silver would have rapidly been turned into proper Sterling upon reaching England...
