A-Questions-On-1992-D-Close-Cent
I have found this "closed" cent, which I am not sure that it is a true closed AM. Can the A and M have various widths that do not touch? I took a picture to compare if there was a difference, the one on top is the one I thought to be AM closed the bottom one is a normal strike.

Here is the pic of both FG. Top is the 1992d in question. I know it's a bad pic but it takes so long to get a good pic.

As a die is used over and over and over again, the mint workers may need to polish the die from time to time to get the most out of it as they can. Polishing the field around those two letters wears it causing the raised letters to appear closer together. You will see variations on these coins all the time, but as was already pointed out, the designer's initials will be the deciding factor.

Another way I was told to tell close and Wide AM is to look at the "TAT" in STATES. If it looks like "T A T" (even spacing between letters)it is Wide AM. If it looks like ""T AT" (the A is closer to the second T) it is Close AM. It works for me. Sometimes the FG are hard to tell for me.
