I'm still fairly new here but I keep up on the posts here in the classic coin section. Anyway I have been looking to buy a 1916 half and I came across this one on ebay, is it a fake. The color doesn't look right but that could be the lighting. The thing that gets me is when looking at it the coin has a lot of fine detail and looks flat at the same time. Let me know what you think, the link is below. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1916-D-Walk...t_500wt_1054

Even with the close ups, this coin, would be hard to pick as a fake, even if I were highly suspicious. A close up of the edge milling would have helped.
You can't do a comparative ring tone test with a picture, or check the weight of the coin..
For any valuble coin, I really like to examine it in hand before buying, unless you know the seller.

I'm going with my gut here, because it isn't necessary to go into deeper research.
It's, at best, a low-AU coin. As such, the price is outrageous. That's MS money for a coin with plainly-visible wear. The character of the photographs makes me further think that the coin might have been mechanically polished at one point, perhaps what we call "whizzed" - some details are far too "mushy."
That's enough analysis. I know nothing of the seller, and will not comment on his/her veracity or character. This coin is not worth (in the best case) more than half of the asking price. Walk away.

Cant be sure if that is wear or a mushy strike. Probably wear. Regardless, nothing really screams fake to me, but as pointed out, that is WAAAAAYAYYYYYYYY too much money for that coin. Shop around some more.

Here is mine for comparison, I would call it AU 58. Much more skirt lines and breast feathers.

dsfree thanks for the others. I will definitely wait. After comparing his price is pretty high for what you get.
muddler I like that one, thanks for posting it up for comparison.

I think that NGC AU-50 at almost half the price would be a very nice addition, I think the PCGS example is just ugly the way it has toned but would pick it over the raw example because I too suspect it has been at least polished. You know its not counterfeit so it takes that worry out of the equation and as was said if you don't like slabs you can always crack it out (as I have done many times) but if you don't mind them the slab can protect the coin from damage throughout the years. Add all that to the price difference and I believe I would go with the graded example if I were looking to add one of these to my collection
