We go to a small town auction house which sells slabbed coins. We figure that the auctioneer probably slabs them himself. The slab case is gnp and can find no information on it. We have bought a few of the coins and not for the grade. My question is if I send them to a proper grading company do I send the coin slabbed or take it out of the case and send just the coin?

I'd take it out of the case, but I'd like to see what everyone else has to say.

If you take it out of the case send me the case, I don't believe I have a GNP slab.

I'd break it out too. However, if you have a coin from a famous hoard and you want it attributed to that hoard, you must forward the coin in the slab as proof it's of that hoard. I know NGC can put a "Soft Pack" around the slab but PCGS will break out the coin and put the attribution on the label of their slab. Don't know about the other TPGs; I've only used NGC and PCGS.

I would definitely break a coin out of a basement slab prior to sending it in. One of the reasons that I would do this is to check for signs of cleaning and other problems that the slab can hide that could actually cause the coin to get a details grade. A lot of the basement slabbers do not identify cleaning or damage with the grade.
Rest in Peace

Definitely break them out before you submit them. If they are a basement slab chances are they're just snap fit holders. I doubt an auction house has an ultrasonic welder. Just be careful if by chance they are sealed. Check out the current thread on how people crack slabs open if you haven't already.

Agree--crack them out, and, be ready for a signifigant grade drop when returned.
