Completely impossible to even guess. Coins are being melted every day now. Almost a job for some.

The biggest melter in the room, the US Mint, does indeed keep records. However, those records only reflect denomination with no regard to series, date, or mintmark. For 3CS through dollars, the total number exceeds 1.1 billion coins. The worst of the worst- 50% of 3CS, 40% of dollars, and 30% of 20 all cent pieces have been melted down. http://www.numismaster.com/ta/numis...icleId=18381

Biokemist6 ty so much for such an interesting link. In answer to your question Stash Treasure that is something that we will never know. We have the Government Figures but coins melted privately are something unobtainable. Hey that sounds like something I heard in AVAITAR. he he

Should I feel guilty for wanting to send my 40% silver off to a metal company?

40% just isn't the same, as far as I'm concerned. Unless theyre rare varieties, proofs, or BU, 40% halves just aren't special. One day, they might be, especially if a lot are melted.

Today at a flea market I heard someone bragging about buying Morgan silver dollars for $10 each and selling to a jewler for $20. Dates were not important, only something to melt. Happens so often, not possible to ever find out the amount. By me electricians melt piles of reclaimed cable and wire and thrown in piles of Pennies, then add it to metals for a local smelter. Even Nickels are being dumped into the smelter piles.
