Okay, so--my mom's dog has serious issues with me. It's a dislike-dislike relationship (I won't go so far as to say hate, or, well . . . . ), and his number one way of getting back at me for slights real or imagined is to come in my room and pee on my stuff.

I had one of my coin boxes open because I was looking for a specific flip last night. And--

--HE PEED ON MY BAG OF WORLD COINS WHILE I WAS AT WORK, AND I JUST DISCOVERED IT.

It looks like nothing else got hit (with aim like this . . . ), and I suspect he was aiming for what had the most recent dose of my scent on it. Luckily, there's nothing super-valuable in this bag and it's a thick Ziploc, but now that I have the coins all dumped out and am sitting here going and am ready to beat the *cough* out of the pedigreed little rat the next time he wanders near me, I need to worry about what was in the bag. Given that it was a freezer bag and the zip was closed, should the coins be okay? Should I throw them in distilled water* and dry them, or, given that they all seem dry and I don't see or smell urine on any of them, should they be okay?

*this is the bag of circulated coins I'm keeping for my nieces to play with when they get a bit older. Hopefully the fact that there are no flips involved here suggests the level of wear on a lot of these.

If they were sealed in a Ziplock freezer bag, they should be fine. Just transfer them to another clean bag.

I have cats and one of them had polycystic kidney disease (PKD) and had bladder issues. There is a spray that works to kill all of the bacteria and germs and remove odor, but I don't think you need that since you will be throwing the old bag away. Relax, all is well.

You should probably keep your door closed when you're not there. Bobby and I need to do that when we go to play pool during the week because our youngest cat gets upset that we're not there and she pees on my side of the bed. (She doesn't pee on Bobby's side of the bed because she's a "Daddy's Brat."

*deep sigh of relief* Thanks, Susan (and hi, don't think we've met before!). I'm just glad I hadn't put all of the stuff I had ready to sort on the box (what I usually do)--I had a peso paper note waiting to go in plastic!

I do try to keep my door closed, but my mom is ridiculously indulgent and he is relentlessly sneaky. I once shooed him and my dog both out of my room, closed the door . . . and two hours later, when I went to take them for a walk, found him curled up in my room even though I swear I shooed him out. A stern reminder that I have a few coins worth double digits might be in order.

It's nice to meet you.

You know, a little effort goes a long way to win a dog's love. Maybe it would be worth it to establish a relationship with your mother's dog. I wouldn't suggest this, but since you have a dog, you would definitely have the ability to win her dog over. That might make your life a lot easier...

Anyone else find this to be a bit over the top? You're talking about beating the whatever out of a dog because he peed on a ziploc sealed bag of coins? For your sake I hope you were just venting and not actually considering doing this. Animal abuse is not something to joke about. Maybe there's a reason the dog doesn't like you? Most dogs just don't dislike a human for no reason, so the part where you said it's dislike-dislike realationship leaves me scratching my head and wondering if there's a reason said dog doesn't like you.

Then in your 2nd post you seem to care more about the relatively small value of your coins then the dog itself. My coins are important to me too, like yours are to you, but let's keep things in perspective...they're just coins, coins can be replaced. I really hope you don't do something that you will either regret or get yourself in trouble.

Sorry but I can't just posts like this and ignore it without saying something.

"...they all seem dry and I don't see or smell urine on any of them". Ok, so what is the problem, exactly?

First of all, a dog doesn't "get back" at you by peeing on your coins - that's all in your mind.
Second of all, beating the dog would be cruel and useless as the dog wouldn't understand why he was being punished.
You sound like a mean person - I'm siding with the dog on this.

Coinhunter, I've never raised a hand to an animal (and never would, unless another animal or person was in danger, e.g. a child being repeatedly bitten would be cause to shove the animal away). That doesn't stop me from wanting to shake the rat and go "ARRRRRRRGH WHY JUST ONCE JUST ONCE CAN YOU NOT GET THAT THESE ARE NOT YOUR THINGS TO DESTROY?"* This particular dog has just . . . never learned to not pee on my stuff, and my mom is very little help in that she doesn't give consistent discipline when he messes. We've also never gotten along, from the time he came home when I was 13--within six hours of her bringing him home he'd decided my hand was a chew toy, and from the point that I screamed and ran into the bathroom because I was bleeding, I was fair game. Ever since then it's been mutual dislike on both sides--he'll cosy up if he wants something, then go right back to snarling when I walk in the door after work at night and peeing on my stuff. When I was in high school it was a common occurrence for my mom to come home and find me angry and crying in the bathroom because every time I tried to open the door he'd make a jump for my face with his teeth bared, and I was treed until someone came to let me out. Sometimes my grampa would actually come home with me just to catch him in a towel and put him in a kennel so I could get inside and do my homework.

As for my concern . . . I own very little, and it's all crammed into half a bedroom. I try to take care of what I have. The fact that my door was open for him to sneak in here--when I close it every day before I go to work, for exactly this reason--left me seeing red. All I ask is that my mom keep her dog OUT OF MY STUFF, especially my valuables--so, my computer and coins. This definitely crossed a line--hence, we need to have a talk, again, about what I own and why I do not want her animal nosing around in it.

And jerseyben, my concern was because when my stuff turns up dry but discoloured, I look for the odour of urine--usually it'll end up being a stain I didn't find for a few hours. But, coins don't show discolouring the way fabric does--and thus, what if I missed something? If just talking over your coins can damage them, what could a few drops of urine do? Cue freakout.

*And at the risk of being exhaustive, I wouldn't do this, either. I imagine it's much the same feeling my mom had the first time I "helped" paint our kitchen when I was eight. (Insert your own child-disaster story here.) Doesn't make me any less mad, though.

You have your own room so you must have some furniture in it. Not knowing exactly what but surely you have something where you could put your coins off the floor. I highly doubt that dog will go out, get a ladder and go up it to your coins just to pee on them. Think about a dresser or some kind of item with drawers and put your coins in there. If there is a closet in your room and it has a shelf, put the coins on that.
OR you could put a sign on the door to your room saying no dogs allowed.

Peed on by canine
Peed on by feline
CAC has GOT to come up with a YELLOW sticker for this little problem!
But what about, "Peed on by squirrel?"
My "pet" squirrel comes in every day, jumps up of my kitchen table, and grabs not one two peanuts at a time. I may have coins on the table.
If a little "tree rat" pees on my coins, what are my options?
Thank goodness coin collectors have a sense of humor!
Without humor we do no stand a chance.

I did the same thing when I was in high school because my younger brother's curiosity pushed me to it.

I gave my mom the extra key, sealed in an envelope with "Emergency Use Only" written on it.

You should invest in a safe, or a lock box type dealy & keep it on a desk, or in the closet then.

Walmart or Staples have them pretty cheap...

This would both keep your Mom & dog outta your personal stuff...just a suggestion.

I hope you end up getting along with the dog eventually cause it can be a great thing for everyone if you do!
