Simply put, any ideas as to what the "crack" is?

It could be a type of lamination, instead of metal flaking off it just cracked.

This. Pretty cool, for that reason.

Unless the photography is really funky, that coin has an oblong shape so it was most likely smashed at some point in its life and I suspect the "crack" is damage related to said smashing.

Yeah, I don't think it's lamination. I'm with
Bob, looks like some kind of damage.

Oh, I saw immediately it was shot from an angle, foreshortening it. Note the proportions are different between each pic. I couldn't imagine elongating the coin in any fashion without destroying more detail than is.

I think those two "cracks" on the obverse may be the result of staining. It appears similar to the ring left when coffee is spilled.

The crack was in the planchet before it was struck which was the result of some contaminants in the silver. When it went through the rolling machine contaminants in the metal created the "crack" because they prevented the metal from melding properly as it went through. Laminations are a result of contaminants or air pockets that were formed horizontally and burst which caused their separation. This crack is more of a vertical type of separation.

Doubleagle thinks the same as I do, the "crack" on this coin is the edge of a stain mark.

it looks like a lamination problem to me. This is one that would be very hard to determine what actually is going on without seeing the coin in hand probably

OK, I am really leaning towards offering the guy 30 bucks and see what is going on.
