I want to take a dslr camera in a housing underwater with me when I scuba dive. I hear that some cameras are better for underwater use. If this is true, I'd like to know which camera will be the best. I want to take professional-looking photos while not really paying too much for a camera(under $1000). Thanks!
There is, to my knowledge, no dSLR rated for underwater use. All must be supplied with a dedicated underwater case, and for scuba-rated depths, the case will exceed the price of the camera. There is no way this will be a cheap proposition for you - I don't see you getting into the water for less than $2000, and probably rather more.
Welcome to Coin Community. I'm curious why your first post at a coin forum would be about scuba diving?
BTW, if you're not going down more than 33 feet or so, there are several digital cameras by Olympus, Pentax, or Canon. They are not DSLR though.
Another option, for a few hundred dollars, would be a water bag. It doesn't have the same functionality as a hard case but it might suit your purposes. There are restrictions for using it though.
I lot of the answer to this question depends on how much you are willing to spend on the housing. Also the strobes you get will probably matter more than the camera. Canon EOS Rebels have been a popular choice in the past because they are solid cameras and if the casing leaks you aren't frying a $3,000 camera. I actually used a Canon Powershot S60 for awhile because I could get a housing for around $200. It was a good place for a hobbyist to start. Hope that gives you some ideas.
The real question is: how serious an underwater photographer do you want to be? If you just want something to take to the Bahamas and do the "walk the reef tour"...then look at some of the digitals that can go to 33 feet. If you're a serious photo hog, it's gonna cost ya.,
BTW, you used to be able to buy "throw-a-way" Instamatic's from Kodak, made of paper and plastic that will do the same thing. I think I paid around 12 bucks, USA, in Can Cun for one to take on a dive around Ilsa Muharees. (Pardon my Spanish.)
I'd go with a GOPro camera HD video you could always pull frame grabs from in HQ. It's the best extreme condition camera on the market period. Not the cheapest, but the best IMO. I have a few friends using them as surf and parachuting cameras. Also race truck shooting from the vehicle with camera mounts installed. Here is an old video from a friends race team I used to photograph, showing some interesting camera work from inside the truck suspension during a race.
