not sure if Mario Brothers would make you a geek. Maybe if you had the old "You've got mail" sound

It wasnt the Mario Brothers it was the coin sound I wanted. You've got mail is too passe. My phone makes lots of different noises depending on what information its recieving. Most of it is modern stuff because I like the unobtrusive noise that conveys usefull information. I just thought it would be funny to have a 'coin sound' for a 'coin forum' and Mario Brothers was somewhat nastalgic and was around long before you've got mail anyway.

I played Mario Brothers on my friends Nintendo before there was any sort of internet as we know it lol. I'm not talking Super Mario Brothers or any of the 3Ds or whatever, plain old 16bit console Mario Brothers lol. I wouldnt be suprised if someone made a console app for modern phones and you can load the original on it lol.

You could also use the intro to Pink Floyd's "Money"! The sweet sound of silver...

Hehe. I'll have to look that up. I'm a floyd fan but only ever listen to it when friends are playing it or it comes on pandora by itself.

The original Nintendo was 8 bit followed by super Nintendo which was 16 bit. If you were playing the original it was 8 bit. I was doing volunteer work at a thrift store one time and someone brought in a original Nintendo with over 50 games, power pad, game genie, gun and power glove. I asked the head of the program if I could buy it all? He said, "sure, $20". I couldn't say I would take it fast enough.

I have an 8-bit NES and 16-bit Super NES in my basement (both hooked to a 27-inch tube TV, which is now used only for those consoles).

I coulda sworn though the sega genesis was 16 bit and it was the same generation as nintendo. I have the sega genesis in the basement somewhere with lots of games. Vaguely remember the red bar across the round console saying '16 bit' when they were all hyped over it. Still 8 bit 16 bit.. Thats less then digital watch even 5 years ago lol. :D

POWER GLOVE!

Yes, the first Sega was 16-bit released in 1989 (in North America). Of course, the Nintendo was 8-bit.

In high school I rewired a power glove I got from an old Toys R Us sell out rack so that it could do "3D Virtual Reality" on my PC. 386 or 486 I think, forget which. Was cool bein able to 'reach into the computer' and manipulate objects. Turn them, spin them, move them around, stack them. Even had finger commands like opening and closing certain fingers would stretch and shrink the object.

Very very basic graphics mind you and not very accurate, but it worked and was cool. The text file I got showed you how to splice open the connector and rewire it but I cheated by using paperclips and gator clamps instead lol. Didnt wanna permanently damage it when it might be usefull later on an actual Nintendo lol. Did rewire the serial cable to the back of the machine though.

Fun days eh? Back at the start of the 'digital revoloution' lol. . I remember when VR was the huge thing that was gunna change technology forever. About as close as we got was the full blown sandbox game Second Life where you can create pretty much anything with a full blown custom programming language and complete control over graphics. Of course that technology got used almost 100% for "Adult topics" not mentionable in a family friendly site. :|

I remember I got rewarded one year for good grades with a Nintendo virtual boy, those things were pretty crappy but I hear they are selling for big bucks now a days. Probably the game system I had that got the most use was the Sega Game gear, we traveled a lot and I loved that thing. Far superior to the Nintendo game boy at the time. I remember when we bought it, my mom and I got to the car and opened the box to find the box filled with all kind of random stuff. Apparently someone had bought one then filled the box with a rock, empty shoe polish tins and trash, rewrapped it and returned it to the store. Luckily we were able to explain the situation and exchange it for the real thing.

I had pretty much all the systems but the Genesis. My wife and cousins had it, though. I never was a big Sega fan.

I sold most of them to a pawn shop. Fortunately, I've found most of them again, cheap at thrift stores. I found an original Game Boy for $3. I put new batteries in it, and it started right up!

Collecting rare games and systems is getting to be like coin collecting. The rarest games can go for $10,000+. People get games slabbed and graded now. They try to complete whole sets, and look for rare varieties.
