Here's one of my all time favourites, an 1885 Morgan graded by PCGS as ms64.......the coin is a lock ms65 borderline ms66 by today's standards. Very rare to find so much intense cobalt and magenta, and the textile pattern for me was the icing on the cake. I purchased this coin about 5 years ago from Anaconda Rare Coins for $1700, absolute moon-money at the time and a decision on which I questioned my sanity. 5 years later, and I have turned down offers of almost 3 times what I paid. Sometimes you have to reach for that special coin. Let's see your favourite coin, and perhaps a little about how you acquired it! 1885 pcgs ms64 Image: 1885cobaltmagenta1.jpg68.01 KB Image: 85cob-mag1.jpg75.82 KB Edited by hadleydog 03/15/2007 3:53 pm

Naw it was the one where someone posted high end photographs of a high end 7070 US Typeset Book.
It started me off and I'm sure a few others....

PS rainbow toned coins are awesome, But for me, I already had collected some nice toned Morgans.

In 1964, while attending college, I bought a 1900 $5 gold piece in BU condition. The cost: $19.95. The same company had a $5 gold Indian for sale for the same amount, but in those days $19.95 was a good chunk of change for a college student -- at least for me. I still have the coin, and I guess I'd say it's my favorite, both because of its beauty, and as a reminder of what might have been mine if I would have had a few more of those $19.95's!!

There are two coins that I like, not that the price that I paid for but as well as the design. 1834 Alexanderine Column ruble (proof) and this: Japan 2003 Aomori 1000 yen Proof Bought way below catalogue value. The Column ruble that I remembered buying was around 300 ish which I thought was a bit too expensive for a proofish coin that's circulated but right now, for something like that, it's going to cost more than 3-4 times of what I paid. The same applies to Aomori coin. I paid just 25usd at that time but current catalogue market is more than 550usd!

I've hijacked one of Superdave's images, but I own this coin as well. While I am a US collector, I do love this coin, and it's the only one being displayed in my house right now. For now, it's number one until I get some Belarus in my collection. Certainly not a high price coin, but beautifully simple IMO.

My favorite, huh. Well, here is my favorite from someplace other than the U.S. 1852 Great Britain Gothic Florin, Queen Victoria. I have loved this design since I first saw it. And here's my favorite U.S. copper coin ... so far 1818 N-10 variety Large Cent. I have a thing for die cracks. And here's my favorite U.S. silver coin ... so far ... 1892 Barber half dollar. I just love the "look" of this one.

I'm still thinking, for myself. I have to say, however, that the two Florins pictured in this thread are both tugging at my heart. So far, my search has been for an 1887 Jubilee example, but those early Victorias are stunning in high grade. Of course, AuldFartte's 1818 put itself on my "must eventually own one" list the first time he posted it....

I agree, Dave - those florins are fantastic!
I am planning to eventually add some to my collection, as well. Regular and Godless (only VICTORIA REGINA on obverse), hopefully.

I really like how you captured the color on that Netherland piece, Dave :) I have a weakness when it comes to 16-18the century thalers and that's an interesting Salzburg piece you have - never seen that one before. Love the scenes on it!
