I'm pretty new to coin roll hunting and still trying to figure out which way is up and what (if anything) makes sense. I hunt boxes I get from local banks and my experience thus far is that pennies are reasonably productive (35% to 40% = coppers, 10 to 20 wheaties per box) but boxes of nickels and halves have so very few silvers that they're not worth bothering with. I haven't yet tried dimes or quarters, but I've been told they're as devoid of silvers as the halves. Anybody have any experiences or opinions to share on which coins are most productive to hunt?

I suppose that this depends on what you see as "productive." If you're merely in it for the precious and semi-precious metals then pickings are slim to begin with across all denominations. :-)

My two favorites are nickels and halves. You're pretty sure to have at least one War Nickel or buffalo per box, and plenty of coins that are over 60 years old to fill an album with. Halves have the biggest "payload" when you do find silver, but some years are hard to find in high grades when coin roll hunting. You'll also find proofs in halves and lots of NIFCs which are worth more than face.

Pennies are fun to hunt for varieties and wheaties are always good for album building. :-)

Dimes and quarters are pretty much devoid of silver (at least here), but quarters can be fun to album fill with the State & Territories and America the Beautiful series. Dimes in my opinion tend to be very boring.

Those are my impressions.

Thanks, Steve. Maybe I'll give the halves more of a try before I throw in the towel. Also forgot to ask in my initial post -- any experiences or opinions on whether bank boxes or CWRs are more productive to hunt?

Copper cents are fun, but dimes I made the most on.
Halves I tried, but never found any.

Dimes - 1 silver per $125, halves - 1(40%) per $500

A agree with Steve, aside form the comment that I will get 1 buffalo per box. I have been through 18 boxes of nickels (my favorite to search) and have yet to find one! Steve you may have to send me a few of yours so I can fell like I found some

I have found maybe 30 or so War Nickels. Found 4 in my last box (2 in the same roll).

If you are silver hunting, go with halves, then nickels, but don't expect to find too much.

I have only been through bank boxes, but I hear CWRs are more productive. Although I would think it would be very hit and miss if you are looking for silver. It may be someone else's dump...

I think it completely depends on what your goals are for searching? I also have to agree with Steve about the percentages of silver nickels per box. As for Buffalo's, I have only found 2 in all the boxes I have searched.

If I had to pick a favorite denomination to search I would pick nickels. Although I have had far more luck finding silver with halves, I find older and more interesting coins with nickels. Example: Recently I found a 1911 V nickel (my 2nd V nickel) in a bank box. I was actually more excited finding this coin than when I found my last 1964 half dollar. Now that I have completed a Kennedy Album I only search halves for the silver.

As for dimes and quarters, I find that dimes are very hard to search because they are tough to see clearly without magnification. Quarters do not tend to yield much silver and most of them are in really bad condition.

As for bank boxes or CWR, I like the bank boxes best. Unless you can get CWR from a bank that you know are not someones dump. Get to know your bank tellers. Be friendly. You never know, they may clue you in on some good information. Example: I just picked a box of halves yesterday that the bank teller had been holding for a week.

A 1 pound bag of M&M's goes a long way.

I hardly search at all, but from time to time I'll search $10 of pennies. I can almost always find 2-8 wheats in that $10. I work with a cash register and check through everything, I doubt I've looked through a box of dimes all together yet but I've found two silver a 64 and a 1929 merc. Few war nickles, no good quarters. If you want older coins that are fun to look for go for nickles and pennies. If you want profit then dimes/quarters/halves. It seems that you get on average one silver per box for each of those three.

The first thing I got into was dimes. I mostly just search for silver, but I still try tol find errors. I average 1 silver per box usually. I just recently started searching halves, and haven't had any luck (searched 4 boxes so far, and no silver)c. I have gotten several AU coins from the half boxes though. I haven't tried pennys and nickels yet. I also haven't tried quarters yet, and I most likely never will. I hear too many negative things with quarters.
