Susan, the wishes of two people over-ride the wishes and the efforts of everyone else who posted, *ALL WITH GOOD INTENTS* to that thread? I spent 30 minutes on a reply only to find it not there along with the thread because two people asked for that? This is more than disappointing.

If one of the requests had not been from the original author of the thread, I would have left it, but since one of the requests I received was from the original author, I felt that the right thing to do would be to honor his wishes.
Folks, please understand that I do everything I can to avoid editing or deleting posts, and there is no way to please everyone. I personally felt that the subject was handled well by our members.
To anyone who feels that the thread shouldn't have been deleted based on the requests I received, I apologize, but I feel that I made the correct decision in honoring the author's wishes.

Susan, I am surprised to see the Black and White post removed! I think the forum discussed this issue in a sensitive and serious manner. Was this offending anyone? I saw nothing offensive or even slightly insensitive in this post. I was thrilled at how well our group handled this topic. Sweeping it away is indeed a sad thing. I think it would be helpful if the “problem” was brought to light and perhaps explained by those who objected. Unresolved and unexplained, leaves the cause open to conjecture and speculation. Often that is not a good thing. I hope this does not cause a rift here. Removing it, I must admit is very disturbing and disappointing to me. This bothers me because I think we were on to something good here. I have spent most of my adult life championing minority causes. I was a supervisor at the University of Chicago with fourteen direct report employees. All were white males when I accepted the promotion. By attrition, and some terminations for just cause over the course of a few years I replaced six of these employees with minority men and women. (All were well qualified for the positions by the way) This was only about ten years ago and I took a lot of heat from other supervisors about doing this, as it caused other shops to review their hiring policies. All but one of the six people I hired were outstanding employees and four of them still work there. I was a Union Steward for 12 years (V.P.of the Local for three)prior to that and fought the good fight from that side of the "table" as well. To me Metalman’s farewell post and now this incident are very upsetting. Sorry for the rant but I am rather passionate about minorities being brought up through education and work and "not" by the failed giveaway programs of our federal government. I thought we were beginning to break some interesting ground here and perhaps start a movement to bring more people into our hobby. I will continue to investigate ways to do this. Susan,I respect your decision, but felt obligated to share these thoughts. Peace,Mike

I hope I wasn't the reason it got pulled? I didn't intend to offend anyone with my views but do consider some of them valid?

No specific member was mentioned in either of the emails I received requesting the deletion.
In the future, requests to delete a thread will be handled differently. I acted in good faith and never meant to anger anyone.
The new policy will be that requests for deletion must be received by half of the posters of the thread and then it will be locked instead of deleted, with an explanation, and left for others to read.

Mike, Bill and Terry, let me make this as plane as I can. Susan was not the one who wanted it pulled, it was myself that thought it had offered up some great ideas and bases to talk about, but it had turned a corner wher it was impossible to say a "word" without evidently hurting someones feelings.
Sorry to say, this is probably the reason this problem has hung around as long as it has already. It's hard to settle a situation, if you can't bring yourself to even talk about it.
So, please don't blame Susan when it was me that said "put a cork in it". Sorry about that.

Susan, I don't think anyone is mad at you. As I stated above,I was disappointed, but respected your decision. Dan, I must have missed the "corner". I thought the post was heading in a great direction. Mike

Hi all, Many of us have passionate opinions and feelings about certain issues- and racial, political, and religious topics can be sensitive ones. A wonderful thing about this board,in my opinion, is that almost without exception, posters here are friendly and respectful. I belive fervently and passionately in free speech. I also think we need to be respectful of each other. I didn't follow the thread in question, but if someone asked hSusan to take it down, that's her call. This is Bobby and Susan's board, and given that they bend over backwards to accomodate us, lets respect their wishes. As always, JMHO Don

I don't know who requested it. For whatever it's worth Susan, I think you did the right thing. Let try and keep this a friendly forum unless someone really get out of hand. Then we can shoot them..! catman

So help me this is the last post on this subject that I will make! I sincerely hope that those of you that feel as I do, that a lot of work still needs to be done on bringing in all shades and colors of people to this hobby, stand up and fight for it every way you can. I intend to keep on calling attention to this situation, and will ask questions of those persons who might utherwise not think of it. For the people that think this was nothing more than a way of belittling other human beings, I can only say I'm sorry you feel that way. It was not intended. I hope some day you can make yourselfs come to grips with this topic without thinking of it as "bating". Only then will we get something acccomplished.

I think the black/white post was thought provoking indeed.
I'm going to air an opinion of mine here but I wouldn't want it to be taken the wrong way by anyone (i try not to do this too often cos it always end up offending someone somewhere).
But I think such topics as the black/white need addressing in the way that it was. It was handled seriously and it was a serious point.
As far as I'm concerned, black, white, Chinese, Egyptian, French, tall, small, male, female. Who care's we're all human beings at the end of the day. I think we should be embracing differences and considering them in relation to one another on an equal footing rather than trying 'not to offend', for trying not to 'offend', offend what?
The longer we keep such issues not talked about, the longer there will be a stigma attached to such issues. Get it out in the open and get it dealt with. If I was black I wouldn't be ashamed of the fact, if I was French I wouldn't be ashamed of the fact.
It's a common problem in society today that many will find certain things possibly upsetting to certain groups, but yet they have come to this conclusion on their own without actually consulting the said group to find out if it bothers them or not! Which means we're all still living on stereotypes even if we try to convince everyone we're not.
Anyhow that's all I had to say.

Susan and Old Dan, No hard feelings here! I guess I was impressed how well most of the members were trying to discuss something, in a very professional way, that is normally NOT discussed. Must admit I was very hesitant to put my Two Cents worth in as I am fully aware the most honest observations can be taken a million different ways by the reader, whoever he or she may be. I wrote a column for a local paper for 5 years and found out very quickly just one little word could bring the wrath down upon you. It wasn't what you meant so much as how they, the reader, percieves what you meant! My worst "ripping" came over the use of the word "antics"! Will never forget the guy giving me h____ over that word when he didn't have a clue what it meant or was? I patiently listened to him rant and rave, for what seemed like a half hour, and then in the end he thanked me for a fine columed and said he and his entire family looked forward to reading my column every week and that they really appreciated my work. I was dumbfounded! Worst ripping of my life with a fantastic ending?

Susan, I believe you did the right thing. When the author of a thread would like it removed, as moderator, you have to make a descision. You'll always find someone who disagrees with whichever decision you make. Using you common sense is the best guide. I also don't think you need to change how you handled the situation.
The topic was sure to get people worried about offending others. People are often offended too easily. It did raise an interesting question though....Just what in OUR cultural backround inspires us to collecting coins.

Terry that's what they call reader interpretation which is sometimes way of from author's intent.
