1997 Bailiwick Of Guernsey Â£1...gold Or Not?

einhard Valued Member Ireland 86 Posts	Posted 09/19/2012 6:49 pm Hi all, Below are photos of the 1997 Bailiwick of Guernsey Â£1 coin that I have. I'm trying to figure out if it's gold or silver, or a mixture of both. It might seem that the difference should be obvious, but even when I unscrew the protective capsule for a closer look, I can't be sure. I have gold coins and silver coins and they look like gold coins and silver coins. This one seems silver, but it has a definite golden lustre about it. Perhaps it's a mixture? Any help appreciated. Sap Moderator Australia 16842 Posts	Posted 09/19/2012 8:45 pm As far as I can tell, this coin was only struck in proof, and only in sterling silver. NGC database page. So any yellowish colouration is going to be just a thin film of tarnish - or "toning", if you prefer. XavierOfGreen Pillar of the Community United States 2589 Posts	Posted 09/19/2012 9:24 pm Krause lists it as silver, with a value of $32.50. Actual Silver Weight is 0.2825 oz. Fineness of 0.9250. Mintage is 15,000. It should weign 9.5 grams. Issue is proof only, KM#73. As Sap stated the yellowishness is likely toning. Report this Post to the Staff
