My mother use to have a few "hobo nickels" that she had gotten from
visiting gentlemen to our farm during the depression to get something
to eat. I do not know what happened to them and would be interested
in finding out more from the users on this board if they have any or
have seen any? Thanks.
Rest in Peace

Hi Hardworker and welcome to the forum! Lots of friendly folk here and just loaded with expertise and experience they are willing to share.

I've seen hobo nickels only a few times, but I've read about them in various coin magazines. You could probably find more from a Google search, but I'm sure others will kick in shortly. Best I remember is they were artfully carved (sculpted?) starting in the Great Depression which for some of us (myself for sure) we never stopped hearing about from our parents and grandparents. Apparently artists, coin jewelry makers, and others are still producing them. Many are still being made and there's a active market for them since there's an active subset of coin collectors who go after them. I haven't looked on ebay to see if they're available there, but it wouldn't surprise me to see some listed.

Welcome, Hardworker2 !!!

I've only seen a couple "in person", but there are a bunch of photos and information out there. Like Fred suggested, Google 'em.

There's a guy named Bill Zach (I think that's right) who makes modern ones that are incredible works of art. Maybe try to find information on his stuff. Some of it is pretty amazing.

Hope you enjoy it here on Coin Community !!!
