I've been a coin collector for a while, and have always meant to start MDing. The other day, I found out a coworker had an old Bounty Hunter lying around. I borrowed it, put new batteries in it, and it lit right up!
I started swinging it around my yard today. Sure enough, I started finding old cans and junk. After a while, I figured out how to find smaller stuff. I soon hit on a penny, then a clad dime. The ground had turned it copper red.
I also found a metal tag, an old nail, and tractor parts. Not bad for my first try! Hopefully, I'll find some better coins next time... Edited by CPC24 09/21/2012 12:29 am

I recently noticed there's an old farmhouse not far from me. I need to get in touch with the landowners. That would be some nice hunting!

Yup, once your hooked you will then go insane You also meet a lot of interesting people out there. Half of them will show an interest and the other half think you are a weirdo or something Wish I always had a vid. cam. with me over the years. Some real winners out there for sure. Better off just to mind your own business, fill your holes, ask permission if not sure if on private property etc. And sadly, there are some parents out there (maybe if you are in a park or tot lot)that do not want you even near their kid/kid's. Times have changed and not always for the better. However, the majority of the folks are cool and the little kids get a big kick out of watching you etc. with the detector. I have more fun showing them the routine and letting them find quarters etc. with my machine.

You may want to buy a better detector to increase your finds. If the bug really bites, have a look at the Garrett Treasure Ace range. Decent prices for a high quality entry level detector...

I went out in the yard again last weekend, and found some more pennies. I've gotten really good at pinpointing coins, and my holes are really small now. BTW, I met the owner of the old farmhouse today, and he seems really nice. I haven't asked him about detecting yet. I thought it might sound a bit forward.
I then went by a local lake, and found a few clad coins, and pull tabs galore! I finally had to just block them out of the detector. Nobody bothered me; in fact, one guy was really impressed. He asked me a lot of questions about detecting.

Congrats CP on getting started! I just got started too, mostly in my backyard!
I recently called my town police and another nearby police station and they said, "yep, go ahead, it's public property. just don't go on private property."
so, that's good to know...
