I just found a 1959 silver quarter in change today(lucky me!), and I need some help in finding out what the best way is to clean the grime off. Any ideas?

Wiping it with cotton wool soaked in acetone is usually worth a try and can't do much harm.

I have a feeling lots of people will advise you "don't clean coins" which is reasonable advice, if you clean it with anything abrasive or overly harsh you will remove value along with the dirt.

If its just junk silver I'm of the belief it doesn't matter if you clean it or not the same amount of silver is still there.

It's actually in rather good condition, it just has a lot of unappetizing dirt and grime. Besides, I don't consider anything "junk silver". Thanks for the info, DavidUK!

If you just soak it in acetone that might work better then the cotton if it is in good condition, to avoid hairline scratches.

Nice find!

If you have a microscope -- take a good look at the grime. Look for anything that appears gritty which will scratch the coin.

Very nice find!
I would most likely leave it alone but you could try acetone.

Thanks for all the info, everyone! I made sure that there was no grit, and used the acetone soaking + the cotton ball, and it turned out great! With the exception of a few small black stains that would not come off, ALL the black grime was just wiped away! Does anyone have a way to get rid of the rest of the stains? If you do, please let me know!
