Hi there

Could someone

shed some light on the " F" just under the date in the close up I have taken of this coin as this does not get mentioned in the Krause World Coins book that I have and what grade would you give to this coin?

The "F" stands for Fraser or James Earl Fraser who was the designer of the coin.

Ooops, had to edit this message when I realized I forgot the grade, my opinion is VF.

The coin IMO looks to be F to VF and I agree with the explaination of the F designers initial.

I would grade this coin Fine. By 1936, the Philly mint was no longer having strike-quality problems, so there is no reason to believe this coin was weakly struck to begin with. The horn is not fully outlined, and LIBERTY is beginning to merge with the rim. All that said, there's hardly any difference in real value between Fine and VF for the most common dates like this.

If this were, say, a 1924-S, then it would be graded by a TPG as VF+, but for a common 1936, it shouldn't grade above F-12.

The "F" is the designer's initial.

I grade it a Fine as the full horn is not quite present. Nice coin though and great pictures Sinbad

Thank you all, Thank you Jim I am just getting used to my camera, experimenting a bit, and I only use a 20 watt desk top lamp with a mirror to reflect the light to where it is necessary.

I need to put some of my french coins on here to see what you grade them, exspecially the Vichy ones seem to be hard to grade

Hi there, Jim you do that I just got my " Monnaies Françaises" this is one very good book as they supply a good guide to grading their coins with photos.

So looking forward to test my skills on French coins.

EarlyUS had it right on the grading of this coin. It's a 20 at best!
