I am totally new to CRH with the exception of separating pre 82' stuff and looking for the stuff in the Cherry Pickers Guide. Is there a list of things for each denomination I should look for, maybe a list of important dates? I think I have a good grip on LMC and Wheat pennies but what about nickels and dimes if I were to buy a box of those? I am also curious about Canadian pennies as I may see 4-6 of those in a box, what years make them more/less valued? Thanks!

A good guide would be The Official Red Book of US coins. It lists mintage numbers and ballpark retail values.

Thanks! Is that the only advice everyone here has?

I personally would try to get the nicest example I could of each date with each mintmark... doing that you will assemble a nice set of coins but also you will notice which ones are harder to find than others.

Thats what I have done and I have almost got the Licoln Cent vol. 1,2,&3 done with the exception of the major key dates like the S-VDB or 31-S. I'm thinking of starting a collection of Jefferson nickels and Roosevelt dimes but that can get costly... especially the dimes with the silver content of the earlier coins.

I was able to find every silver Roosevelt dime from circulation, except for 5 dates, which I bought. I also have 5 Roosevelt folders in progress, between 50-70% complete, all from silver found in circulation. One nice thing about the Roosevelt series, there are no expensive key coins. Good luck

A Jefferson nickel set can be built from roll hunting. Worst case is that you would have to buy the 1950-D (which is not expensive).
