I found this 1860 Half Dime that was looking for a new home. What do you think that PCGS had to say about this? Thanks for your interest! (sellers images)

I don't think that small scratch constitutes damage. I'm going to say they knocked it down to MS62. Nice coin!

Cleaned? Not according to PCGS, in an older holder. I believe that I read in a previous thread that PCGS used to to be tougher back in the day.

Quote: I believe that I read in a previous thread that PCGS used to to be tougher back in the day PCGS has went through many stages. Some were tougher and some were more lax than they are today. I am not one that can tell around what time the coin was graded like Conder101 can. Allot of people get it confused about older PCGS slabs and think it is an automatic upgrade but that is just not the case, if you are in a more lax period than when it was graded then yes it can upgrade but if the grading is tighter than it was when it was graded it may downgrade. I know allot of people that see the old clacker holders and they are willing to pay a premium just because they think if its in a clacker holder it will definitely upgrade, what they don't understand the ones that are a lock upgrade have mostly already been sent back in

I can't tell if there's rubs on this coin. It could be an AU58 or it could go as high as 63. It looks pretty nice to me.
What PCGS did back in the day (before details grading) was net grade problem coins into problem free holders. A big no-no IMHO.

Nice coin, these are virtually impossible to find in fantastic shape raw. Seems cleaned to me, maybe the smallest trace of wear. AU-59!
I had a $1 gold piece, and it had a single scratch much less minor than that which didn't touch any devices and near the rim. But was slabbed "scratched" by ANACS.

I forgot to upload the full slab, it's a PCGS MS-61. I will post it tonight. My friend (who I got him started on his slabbed 7070) is bugging me to sell it to him!
