I've been collecting the Three Cent Nickel series for five or so years now and have been trying to hunt down two of the key dates for a few years. The 1884 is certainly the most elusive of the series, and despite it's second-largest mintage (1700), many more 1885 pieces (1000 mintage) hit the market each year. The 3CN series is peculiar because for most of the tough dates it's nearly impossible to distinguish the proof coins from the business strikes. After a few failed attempts at locking down a coin for my own collection I finally found an 1884 certified as a business strike on the market. I wanted to find it in any circulated condition (not MS because those prices are tens of thousands of dollars...), and happened upon a very nice AU example. I negotiated a trade and the coin arrived in the mail yesterday! I don't usually post my new purchases but this one means a heck of a lot to me since it's been my uncatchable unicorn coin for years now. Edited by madhandles761991 09/23/2012 3:57 pm

Congrats! That is a beauty! Maybe it is the lighting but it looks the coin has some nice green, yellow and red hues? Looks great!

Your dilemma reminds me of last May in New Hampshire. NH COIN EXPO. A BRANCH mint proof coin! Lightly circulated. The grading company missed it. It was displayed at our exhibit. It took a lot of work but my partner from the BCCS and LCCS proved his case. A Liberty Seated something or another. Perhaps only six or seven examples exist. If that. As you track down those elusive 3 cent pieces, document your hunt and research. It takes we collectors to study these elusive coins and to report our findings. And WHY NOT CELEBRATE YOUR FIND? You deserve to pat yourself on your back!

congrats on catching your unicorn. I know it feels good to finally be able to acquire the "one" coin you have been trying to find for years for your collection. I agree you should be proud of it as you have worked for it and I think you found a great example as it looks like it deserves the grade it was given

I'm envious, the 1884 is the last piece I need for my set as well.

Last year I put an email out to a few hundred dealers and not a single response for an 1884. I got lucky finding this one
