Barbers are usually out of my pay grade, but I managed to win this auction the other day and felt lucky. Give me your grade and hopefully I can justify the price I paid. For your consideration...

It appears to be EF maybe even AU-50. Hard to tell for sure from the pictures. Also, it could just be the picture, but it looks like maybe it was cleaned because of all the scratches on the obverse. Definitely a nice coin though, what did you get it for?

As my teen son would say, "My bad" on the pix. Not very flattering shot with daylight showing every little scratch and using hand-held close up lens. I would say you are right about the cleaning part. Probably was cleaned.

I think it might have low AU details but it appears to be harshly cleaned.

I was thinking along the AU line as well (because of the incredible detail under a glass), which would put a properly toned and aged coin into the $100-120 range; but with the cleaning, I dropped the value down to between $75-90 range. What do you think?

It looks like a AU details harshly cleaned. The thing about barbers is, it is tough to find coins that are not cleaned! I buy lots of barbers that are cleaned, in some cases it is the only way to find them raw. I send off lots of barbers in higher grades to NGC that are cleaned as well. You just can't buy barbers as easily as say Morgans. The tend to go for a higher value. Cleaned purple slab coins on ebay tend to go for non=cleaned prices. It is a nice coin! Congrats!

Here's the thing, folks: 1892 was the first year of issue for the dimes, quarters and halves. People saved them in large numbers. And large numbers were cleaned and polished and "MADE" to look better. (Sigh.) We Barber people have found, as no doubt collectors in other specialties, more information about our area than can be shared in a single post. Dealers must of necessity know a lot about of EVERYTHING! As people who focus on a particular series, it is our lot in collecting life to know more than a lot!
Barbers are tough? Gee, I did not know that ---- NOT!
Warning: My guilty pleasure - knowing more than the dealer with whom I am speaking!
Cinemabon, you said it best in your opening:
... I managed to win this auction the other day and felt lucky ...
Continue to feel lucky!
I just remembered: Re: 1895-O Dime - "Often collected in cleaned condition." When more existing survivors have been cleaned than not, a collector has to often choose the best of the "less than ideal."

I'd say the details are in the "high" AU range, based on the hair detail below the LIBERTY band and the sharp definition in the center tail feather of the eagle. These are the first areas to show wear and are often weak even on AU-55 examples. The harsh cleaning I think is responsible for the abraded areas over Miss Liberty's cheek, cap, and neck, as well as the field hairlines. The coin looks polished as well. Value has taken a big hit due to the serious mishandling. At a guess, "market value" might be $50 or so. Unfortunately, many new collectors will be tempted to overpay for such a bright, shiny coin with lots of detail (been there myself, come to think of it). They'll learn eventually!

May once have been AU-58 but wire brushing or whatever horrors the cleaner inflicted on this coin stripped off so much detail that many surfaces appear to be no better than EF

I tried to take new pix that would show off details in more flattering light...
