As someone who wants and needs to know more...how does tarnish, such as below, affect the grade of a coin...especially a nickel?

I would say VF-30 IMO, and I don't think tarnish affects the grading. But that is a question for someone other than myself to be honest. I think trying to clean it would be devastating to the value, but I don't think tarnish will hurt it in value.

This coin is really pushing EF IMO also, but there is just too much wear I think.

In my opinion the coin has classic VF details ,, But for me with the tarnish (dirt and grime) I would not pay over F price for it .

You see eye appeal is a person to person thing, some like myself do not like the coffee or black color coins while others find them attractive and natural .

all of the top three will either body bag it as environmental damage(PCGS ,NGC) or slab it with the notation XX details environmental damage(ANACS)

Metalman's words, all true, illustrate the difference between strict grading and market grading. Beyond the fact of the potential for bodybagging, the existence of tarnish/toning on a coin *should not* affect the grade. I don't know for sure if this one would bodybag or not, but it probably would. Even if the color were pronounced acceptable, the scratch through PLURIBUS would probably disqualify it.

Now, to answer your exact question, in the hands of a TPG the color would very likely lower the grade if it did get graded.

Thanks, everyone. I'm happy enough to have the coin in my collection, and I didn't pay over the Red Book price for Fine, so probably did ok in that way. My goal is to put together the complete series in circulated condition of Fine to Very Fine. (Excluding the unobtainable 1913, of course.

A more appropriate term might be to state that the coin is "corroded", although only lightly. It has VF detail otherwise, and should have a net value of around Fine money.
