Hey! First time post with a very important question...
I recently acquired a rare coin (Morgan 1888 - O) in XF to AU condition. A dealer was going to offer me $500 for it until he saw that there were two small marks on the top of the reeded edge (very small, not even noticeable at first), and thought that it meant it was used to be in jewelry. He then told me that the coin was worth close to nothing...
Is this true? I sent it off the NGC to get it certified anyways just in case..
Thanks in advance!

sorry I don't have pics. But in general, if there are two small nicks on the reeded edge that might indicate it used to be on a necklace (he was 90% sure it was), is the coin completely worthless?

There is always at least intrinsic value with Morgans because they are 90% silver. Without pictures, though, the actual value of the coin will not be able to be determined.

what if it weren't a morgan. say it was just another coin that had been placed in a necklace but since removed with minimal damage. would it still be worth something?
anyways I sent it off to NCG for certification, what will it say when it gets slabbed?

It's still worth something. Are you sure it's an 1888-O?. The dealers first offer sounds high unless it is a DDO.

to CCF! The 1888 o Morgan is a common date piece & is worth $30+/- in AU condition. There is a 1888 o that is worth $350 - $900 in XF - AU & that is the Dbl Die obv., This is called Hot Lips Variety.(These are Red Book prices).

Idk what the Morgan was.. I'm going to keep it regardless. I'm actually much more interested in the chinese coin worth 800 on ebay. Can someone please tell me if it still has value if it was used in jewelry (two small indentations on the side of the reeding)? I sent it off to NGC to get slabbed but what will they say?

The other possibility is that it could be the VAM-7A "Shooting Star". I have one for sale currently on The Bay...

For all we know, it is a worthless modern Chinese counterfeit and NGC will refuse to slab it.

Pictures! An 1888-O isn't a key date in circulated condition so I am assuming it's a rare VAM... Hot Lips or LDS scar face?

I'm going to call shenanigans on your dealer, Roger. Two teensy-tiny, barely-visible marks? That shouldn't even bump it from XF down to F, much less make it worthless.
As noted above, Morgans are 90% silver and will always be worth at least spot, even if they command no premium.
