I was looking for some info on these, and can't find much regarding the dimensions, purity, guides to verifying authenticity, etc. I was wondering if any of you could direct me to a decent resource?

Great question, I see these everywhere at coin shows, but don't know a darn thing about them.

You can, of course, start with the Red Book. There's a fair amount of information on Mike Locke's page, http://www.calgoldcoin.com.

There's this book: http://www.alaskacoinexchange.com/A...d%20Book.htm but as I recall about a year or two ago, a really nice book had come out. It was rather expensive but it was considered to be THE reference. I can't seem to find any links for you, though.

Sufficed to say there are a LOT of counterfeits, purity wasn't very standardized and they are fascinating little pieces of history.

I am not familiar with these, but I have read that each and every one of them should be verified.

I guess that these coins would make ideal subjects for jeweler's copies.
Just the right size!

Two rules of thumb for Cal Gold-

#1- If is does not have a denomination, i.e. you may see 1/4 but no DOL or DOLLAR, then it is not genuine.

#2- If you see a bear/crude animal-looking figure, it is not genuine.

Those two rules will eliminate about 90% of the counterfeits/replicas.

So none of them should have animals on them?
