But can you tell where a roll was minted without opening it?

ACTF_ZETT, that is not a dumb question at all.....
amac44 told me a trick that you can use and maybe find out what a roll is without opening it.....take a pencil and lightly scribble on the side of the wrapper and you should be able to see some type of outline of the lettering and numbers......

Thanks Tpatna, that answers my question. There is no way to distinguish which mint an unopened roll came from without degrading the condition of a roll. So this means I will need to purchase 35 dollar rolls from the mint.

You can trade a P mint roll for D mint with someone here if you just want one D mint coin buy the un-circulated mint set when it comes out that will have every coin from the year from both mints.

Just a quick note....I do not think light pencil marks on the paper roll would decrease the value in any way....also if you do it light enough, it can be erased. Good luck in your search

Well I do know the rolls that I have and which mint they are from because I looked at the tellers loose coins. I suppose I can mark each roll with a P or a D in pencil then.

I found someone on the forum to trade with and sent them a Philly roll in trade for a Denver roll. Hopefully I'll be able to continue trading with them as the series keeps coming out.

I marked my rolls with the word Philly and Denver on the outside so they don't get mixed up. I wish they would have come up with a clear wrapper for this coin series. Maybe they can make a wrapper with a clear window so you could at least see the mint markings. Sure would make it easier to find those blank edges too

Odd that ACTF_ZETT stated this is the first post he made and at the far left under his id it says 11posts. As to any of your questions, since you live in Illinois, you should just go to some of the many coin shows around here. There are coin shows all over the place and frequently. You can find out everything you want to know about those dollars there and usually find any of the ones you need there. There are listings of these shows on the Coin World web site, JMS coins web site, PCGS web site or you could just go to Goole or Yahoo and type in Illinois Coin Shows. There are 3 each Month just outside the Chicago area. Several down in the Southern Part of the state. If you live anywhere near Chicago, try the Countryside Coin show on the 2nd of each Month. About 80 to 120 dealers.
Myself, I don't like those baby dollars and had one, gave it to a waitress for a tip and she gave me a dirty look. I told her it was a dollar and she said YEAH, RIGHT and walked away. I fell into the Bicentennial Quarter saving trap and ended up taking the mess to a bank.

I have a neat trick for distinguishing between P and D mint rolls, just take a rubber band and put it around the roll for the D mint or better yet use the square tubes and put the roll, wrapper and all, in it and write on the outside of the tube with a sharpie.

So the saga continues. After finding out that I in fact have all Denver mint dollars, I came home tonight eager to open up my roll of Philadelphia dollars. Suprise suprise, I opened up the roll, and they are all Denver mint. I know the coin I looked at from the teller yesterday had a P on the rim.

So here is my new question, when a bank orders coins, do they receive a mixture of both Denver and Philadelphia rolls, or do they get a full box of just one mint.

This is very discouraging. I already hate that they decided to put the mint and year on the side of the coins. Let alone the most important part, In God We Trust.

Tpatna, the pencil rubbing does not work. The rolls are wrapped around the coins two times. The paper is too thick and the impression of the text on the side of the coin is too fine.

I now have $150 worth of Denver mint dollars, although I have 4 unopened rolls, who knows that is inside.

I'd hate to open the only roll I have to see the mint mark or if it is an error coin. I guess my goal is to have 1 bank roll of each president no matter what mint mark.

My search for rolls of Philadelphia Mint Washington dollars ended today. And the conclusion, still empty handed. This series will be interesting to collect from here out for me. As for my Philadelphia rolls of W dollars, looks like I will be headed to purchase rolls for a premium.

I went to an additional 4 banks today. Suprise supirise, all four banks are completely OUT of Washington dollars. Even cleaned out of loose dollars. This is good and bad. Good because this means all the banks will be ordering John Adams dollars. Bad because it seems like everyone is purchasing them, so there goes the value.

As we get ready for the John Adams coin relase next month, things should be changing from bank to bank. They are starting to limit rolls per customer because of the popularity (around here at least).

The only error coins I will personally really recgonize as a whole in the series, is the missing enscription on the side of the coins. There are a lot of people out there selling coins calling out other errors, like extra spikes or filled letters. The missing text will be the only error on this coin that I think would be worth looking for. (Then other huge errors such as blanks, but most other "errors" I have seen are all a result from shipping damage in my opinion).
