Was up to a local small lake in my town yesterday.
Water level has been down because of lack of rain
so I do the waterline along the shore as well as a few feet
into the water. Picked up my usual few dollars worth of clad coinage,
keys, etc. Then I find this a few feet off the normal shoreline in a few inches of muck and mire. The cap unscrewed easily and must of let the water in as it was full. Not knowing at the time what it was I dumped out the water and whatever was in it. Looked to be made of brass and not in bad shape but a little crud on it. Did not clean it at all. It is small at 2 3/4" tall by 1 3/4" in diameter (widest point) Did not take me long after I got home to find out what it was.
The smallest size (they call it "Keepsake") pet cremation urn.
Not sure if the remains might have been already been poured out into the water before then dropped or maybe the whole urn with remains was dropped into the water. Either way when I emptied it it was back into the water. Never know what you may find. Pics. are dark but a general idea anyway. Guess it is made of spun brass from what I read about them.

These also are used to contain small portions of human cremated remains (here in California we need to file a separate permit for each one, but other states do not have the same requirement), and is becoming more and more a popular thing for people to do here in California where cremation is on the rise.

Maybe I will put a local an ad on C-list in lost and found.
I have done that in the past with things I found out MD'ing.
Gee, I hope it was not human ashes in it. I'm kind of leaning (knowing
the history of the park/lake and it's visitors etc.) that it may of actually been one of the little creatures that are in the water or area that someone may have caught at one time and then it croaked. Maybe a frog or turtle or duckling/goosling etc. Either way He/She is back in the water. With my luck I will eventually turn up a body or gun that was used in a major murder case. Swell. This is the same place I found that old dog tag. Tracked down the owner and returned it to her. It was 15 yrs. earlier that she had lost the tag. Her dog had been dead almost ten years hence I found it. Had got her phone # from the tag and called her. I made the poor woman cry. Oh crap. She did later thank me for returning it though. I felt better then.
Small list of what I have found there over the years:

Urn, dog tags, 10 lb. lead divers belt weight, key's, old padlocks,
10K gold ring, 14K gold/diamond ring, various pcs. of silver jewlery,
at least $400.00 worth of clad coinage, a 2006 ASE reverse proof still
in the airtite, older Franklin half, a few geo caches etc.
What's next ? Will see
